The UN's IMO is considering a global carbon levy on the shipping industry to reduce emissions, but will it float or sink under political pressure?

Shippin' Ain't Easy But It Gotta Get Green!

What up internet! It's Snoop D O double G droppin' knowledge bombs on ya like it's hot. I just peeped this article about the United Nations tryna get all up in the shipping game talkin' 'bout makin' boats go green. Apparently these ships are pumpin' out a whole lotta smoke – like 3% of the world's carbon emissions. That's almost as much as my tour bus! They're talkin' 'bout makin' new rules to phase out fossil fuels maybe even puttin' a carbon tax on these bad boys. Fo shizzle that's a lotta green for goin' green!

Carbon Levy? Sounds Like Some Heavy Green!

So the big dawgs at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) are meetin' in London to hash this out. They're throwin' around ideas like a global fuel standard and a carbon levy which is basically makin' these ship owners pay for the pollution they're causin'. Sara Edmonson from Fortescue calls it "absolutely historic," like findin' a platinum record in a thrift store. But she also says “the jury is still very much out” when it comes to a global carbon price. This could be huge dawg like the 'Chronic' droppin' in '92 but ain't nothin' guaranteed in this crazy world.

Some Like It Hot Some Don't Like the Tax!

Now not everyone's feelin' this carbon levy ya dig? Countries like Brazil China and Saudi Arabia are throwin' shade worried about their wallets and competitiveness. It's like when you're tryin' to roll a perfect blunt and someone's complainin' about the price of the sticky icky. Ralph Regenvanu from Vanuatu is all for it sayin' the UN isn't movin' fast enough on climate change. He thinkin' this the way to go.

Net Zero by 2050? That's a Long Time From Now Dogg!

These IMO folks already agreed to aim for net zero emissions by 2050. That's like sayin' I'm gonna quit smokin'… eventually. John Maggs from the Clean Shipping Coalition says they're gonna get somethin' done but the question is how ambitious they gon' be. There's a big gap between the tree huggers and the money counters. Like when you roll up to the studio and you have a bunch of G's and some people thinking about the budget.

90% of Global Trade? That's More Weed Than I Can Smoke in a Lifetime!

The article says shipping carries 90% of global trade. That's a whole lotta stuff movin' around and it's hard to make these massive ships go green. Angie Farrag Thibault from the Environmental Defense Fund wants a "decisive" economic measure to cut pollution. She wants the shipping companies to adopt zero fuels and technologies and help out the island nations that are gettin' hit hardest by climate change. Seems like a win win fo shizzle.

So Will It Float Or Sink? Only Time Will Tell Ya Dig!

Bottom line this could be a game changer for the planet or it could be another bunch of talk with no action. We gotta wait and see what happens at the IMO meeting. But one thing's for sure: the world needs to get greener and that includes these big ol' ships. Peace out and remember: stay blazed… with knowledge!
