The Ghost of Trade Wars Past
Ah yes the intricate dance of economics. It seems a new drama is unfolding on the American stage one that could leave ordinary citizens rather peckish shall we say. Torsten Slok a chap from Apollo Global Management paints a rather bleak picture. He suggests that the tariffs imposed like a sudden frost by the previous administration are about to nip us all rather sharply. One can't help but wonder have we learned nothing from history? As I've often said 'An understanding of the natural world and what's in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfillment.'
Containerships in Crisis
Imagine if you will great containerships those behemoths of the sea once bustling with goods destined for American shores now slowing to a standstill. Slok's timeline suggests a rather unsettling sequence of events. First the tariffs are announced a bit like a sudden change in the weather. Then the containerships begin to falter. Soon trucking demand grinds to a halt and we are left with… well empty shelves. It’s rather like watching a pride of lions slowly starve because their usual prey has vanished. A disturbing sight indeed.
Empty Shelves: A Consumer's Nightmare
The consequence as Mr. Slok so eloquently puts it is 'empty shelves in US stores in a few weeks and Covid like shortages.' A chilling prospect! Imagine popping down to your local grocer only to find the shelves as bare as a penguin's nest in the Antarctic winter. It would be a rather unpleasant surprise wouldn't it? Like discovering a blue footed booby with no blue feet. Utterly disconcerting!
The Domino Effect of Layoffs
And the ripple effect extends further. As trucking and retail industries suffer layoffs begin. People lose their jobs like lemmings running off a cliff alas! It's a stark reminder that even the most robust of ecosystems be it a rainforest or an economy can be fragile. A sudden disturbance can lead to unexpected and often devastating consequences. As I always say 'No one will protect what they don't care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.'
A Recessionary Summer?
The culmination of all this? A recession looming this very summer. While others on Wall Street murmur about a possible downturn in 2025 Slok's prediction is particularly grim. It's a rather pessimistic outlook like spotting a Komodo dragon in your garden. One hopes he is mistaken. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent acknowledges the tariff situation is 'unsustainable,' a sentiment I echo wholeheartedly. Levies on goods from China now stand at a staggering 145%. One can only hope that cooler heads prevail and a more sustainable solution is found. For the sake of us all really.
A Glimmer of Hope?
However it is not all doom and gloom just yet. Aneesha Sherman from Bernstein suggests there may be a 'pull forward' in orders meaning there are more goods in stock than expected. 'Don't expect empty shelves yet,' she advises. Perhaps the shelves will remain stocked a little longer like a well stocked pantry before a long winter. One can only hope can't one? As I've learned from watching the natural world resilience is often found in the most unexpected places. And as I always say 'It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.'

Maybe we should all start gardening and become self-sufficient.

Time to invest in local businesses, I suppose.
