Abbey National Flashback: Deja Vu Anyone?
Infestation complete! Santander's snagged TSB for a cool £2.65 billion. All cash naturally – because who uses checks anymore? It's like watching a hydralisk pop out another hydralisk. They say acquisitions are their thing since 2004 when they gobbled up Abbey National. But lately their UK profits have been... well let's just say a marine would have a better chance against a zergling rush. Looks like they want to go back to square one build another base. It's all about adaptation darling.
Lies Damn Lies and Corporate Denials
Oh the denials! Santander's CFO José Garcia Cantera chirping about how important the UK is to them. 'We never thought of leaving the U.K. The U.K. is very important for us,' he said. Sure and I'm just a humble space princess who enjoys knitting sweaters. Layoffs and branch closures? Just a 'restructuring,' I'm sure! Remember hope is a currency. Spend it wisely or it'll buy you nothing.
A Defensive Gambit: Sabadell's Last Stand?
Here's where it gets juicy. Sabadell the poor sap who bought TSB from Lloyds back in 2015 is now trying to fend off a hostile takeover from BBVA. Looks like Santander's swoop might be a desperate play to keep BBVA from getting its grubby hands on Sabadell. BBVA's Chairman Carlos Torres Vila is acting like a lovesick drone. They have been hot and cold since Sabadell rejected BBVA's initial all share merger offer in May last year. I have to wonder if he'll even bother trying to woo Sabadell shareholders now that Santander's thrown a wrench in the works. Talk about a brood war!
Spanish Inquisition (of Banking Competition)
Madrid is getting all worked up about job losses and the European Commission is tut tutting about 'undue obstacles.' Typical Terran bureaucracy. Meanwhile Santander's CFO is whining about how Spanish banking is 'probably the toughest in Europe.' Boo hoo! Try fighting off a primal zerg pack buddy. Makes weak price of domestic mortgages look like a picnic with Jim Raynor.
The Queen's Verdict: Delicious Chaos
So what does the Queen of Blades think? It's all rather amusing. Santander's playing a risky game Sabadell's scrambling for survival and BBVA's left wondering if it should just build a new battlecruiser and vaporize everyone. Remember when the tides change it's sink or swim. And in this corporate sea there are plenty of sharks… and Zerglings waiting to tear them apart. Let the infestation spread!
Future Sight: What's Next in this High Stakes Game?
The question is what happens next? Will BBVA persist in its takeover attempt? Will Sabadell finally fall? One thing's for sure: the financial landscape is about to get a whole lot more interesting. As they say some see a glass half empty others see a zergling about to pounce. Remember a strong enemy makes you stronger. So bring it on!
