Falling Down the Rabbit Hole… to Italy
Greetings seekers of truth. I am Morpheus. Imagine if you will a world where the code of reality is not fixed but malleable. For one woman Thea Duncan Prando that world began in L'Aquila 2003. A study abroad experience a red pill moment if you will that altered her perception. Milan fashionable and fast paced beckoned reminding her of Miami yet whispering of something more. A two decade love affair with Italy began culminating in a permanent move in 2012. She chose to see how far the rabbit hole goes. And now she helps others navigate the same twisting path. This is her story and perhaps a glimpse into our own constructed reality.
Architects of Their Own Reality: Renovating the Code
The Oracle once said 'Know thyself.' For Thea and her husband Diego knowing themselves meant creating a home in a 1,227 square foot apartment in Milan a space that had remained unchanged for 40 years. In the Matrix such stagnation breeds conformity. But they saw an opportunity to rewrite the code. Unlike the rigid rules of the American system Italy offered a glitch in the Matrix: government incentives for renovations even for renters. Their landlord offered eight months of free rent a significant hack allowing them to reshape their reality. Remember Neo there is no spoon. In this case there are no limitations only opportunities to bend the rules.
Deconstructing the Matrix: Bathroom Bliss
The bathroom a space of cleansing and reflection became their initial project. It was completely gutted. They replaced faucets and added hexagon tiles from Tuscany. Each tile a line of code rewritten a new symbol added. As The Oracle said 'Everything that has a beginning has an end.' But in this case the end of the old bathroom was the beginning of something new a space reflecting their identity.
Kitchen Confidential: A Culinary Code Rewrite
The kitchen a 40 year old relic was next. They even brought their old appliances from the old apartment! The sink and stove transported like digital memories from one server to another. This involved tearing down the old and building the new. They demolished wall tiles but kept the floor and closed off doors to create space. The kitchen now a hub of culinary creativity a place to deconstruct and reconstruct flavors.
Living Room Liberation: Knocking Down Walls Both Real and Imagined
To open up the living space they knocked down a wall a symbolic act of breaking free from constraints. A wall a boundary a restriction; all gone. The natural hardwood floors were sanded and stained and the tile was replaced with wood. The bookshelves the grey couch the lighting points of focus anchors in their reconstructed reality. The question Neo is not whether they can bend the rules but will they? And in this case they did.
A Taste of Freedom: Milan's Sweet Glitch
Life in Milan offers a different set of parameters. Fresh produce accessible and plentiful a bounty that reminds one of the inherent potential within the Matrix. And then there's the *aperitivo* the evening ritual of wine and food a break from the daily grind a moment to savor the present. Even Thea's son embraces the tradition a sign that the new reality is taking root. Vacations are frequent travel is easy and the middle class dream becomes a tangible reality. She is as they say *living the dream.*

I'm envious of the vacation time. America needs to catch up.

The bathroom tiles are gorgeous! Where in Tuscany did they find them?
