A Spark of Order in the Chaos
Well well well. Look at this. Foxconn bless their hearts has received approval from the Indian government to build a semiconductor plant. A step towards order in the midst of chaos one might say. It's a joint venture with HCL Group and they're throwing 37.06 billion rupees – that's $433 million for those of you playing along at home – into the pot. Uttar Pradesh the chosen battleground will supposedly see this silicon oasis operational by 2027. Let's hope they clean their room before then. After all a disorganized factory floor is a disorganized mind and a disorganized mind... well you get the picture.
The Chip Off the Old Block
According to Ashwini Vaishnaw India's information minister this facility will be churning out Foxconn's display driver chips. You know the little things that make your phone laptop and even your self driving (supposedly) car light up. The plan is to produce 20,000 wafers and 36 million of these chips per month. That's a lot of potential order arising from the primordial chaos of the factory floor. One has to ask though: are they truly ready for this level of responsibility? It's like giving a toddler the keys to a Ferrari.
The Great Decoupling: East Meets... Southeast?
Now here's where things get interesting. Apple suppliers like Foxconn are increasingly turning to India. Why? Well let's just say the romance between Beijing and Washington has cooled off considerably. Trade tensions you see. A bit like a couple arguing over who gets the last piece of cheesecake. But building chip factories is hard work you know? Foxconn even bailed on a $19.5 billion deal with Vedanta last year. Seems like someone wasn't cleaning their room properly. Though it is very possible that it was too much responsibility on one plate you can't force people into things without them ending up resenting you remember that bucko!
Apple's Indian Summer?
Apple apparently wants to move most of its iPhone production to India. Trump's tariffs on China probably have something to do with that. Bernstein analysts are saying India could account for 15% 20% of total iPhone production by the end of 2025. Evercore ISI claims 10% to 15% are already assembled there. Good for them. May be they should aim a bit higher what is there to lose by doing so you know? That way the risk of missing the target is reduced so to speak.
Tariffs: The Dragon's Breath?
Even though some of Apple's products got exemptions from Trump's “reciprocal tariffs,” those exemptions might be temporary. The U.S. Commerce Department is sniffing around semiconductor technology imports which could lead to more tariffs. It's a bit like living under the threat of a dragon's fiery breath isn't it? You never know when it's going to incinerate your business model. You gotta get up early and get going if you want to slay those dragons pal!
India's Chip Dream: A Mission From God?
India's been courting Foxconn as part of its “Semiconductor Mission.” Ambitious to say the least. They want to build a strong chips and display ecosystem. This Foxconn joint venture is just the sixth semiconductor unit to be constructed under this plan. Will it work? Will India become a chip making powerhouse? Only time will tell. But remember chaos precedes order. And sometimes it takes a bit of a mess to create something truly worthwhile. Sort yourself out India and make something of this opportunity. You have to act as if you're making a deal with God when you set a target for yourself. Because you are.

Good for India! Diversifying the supply chain is crucial for national security.

Great news for job creation in Uttar Pradesh! Finally, some progress in that region.
