Hello Habibi! Tesla Goes Desert Chic
Well hello there! Bill Gates here weighing in on Tesla's grand entrance into Saudi Arabia. It's like that old Windows commercial: 'Where do you want to go today?' For Elon it seems the answer is Riyadh! Now I know what you're thinking: electric cars in the land of oil? Sounds like trying to sell snow to an Eskimo right? But hey even oil sheiks appreciate a bit of eco bling these days. They are trying to diversify to clean energy and I am all for that.
Elon Trump and a Whole Lotta Sand
Timing is everything. Tesla's big debut is happening just before what is rumoured to be Trump's visit to the Kingdom. Could this be Musk’s way of cozying up to well everyone? Smart move Elon even if your sales are tanking a bit in Europe thanks to all the controversy. Gotta keep those revenue streams flowing right? As I always say 'Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose.' Let's hope this isn't the case here!
Saudi Arabia's Secret EV Love Affair
Here's the kicker: Saudi Arabia is already deep into EVs! Their sovereign wealth fund is major shareholder in Lucid Motors and they are even building their own EV brand Ceer Motors. It's like they are saying 'We love oil but we also love not polluting as much.' Gotta give them credit for planning ahead. Maybe I should invest in a sand powered car. Just kidding... or am I?
BYD? More Like 'Be Your Doom'!
Tesla isn't the only kid on the block. Chinese EV giant BYD is already there and is a strong competitor. Plus Lucid Motors is already setting up shop. So it's not going to be a walk in the park for Tesla. As Tatiana Hristova from S&P Global Mobility said 'Tesla won't be a pioneer in the market… it will be a hard start.' Ouch! Looks like Elon has some serious competition to worry about. Let's hope he doesn't pull a 'Windows Vista' on this one.
Chargers? We Don't Need No Stinkin' Chargers!
Okay maybe they do need chargers. Lots of them. Apparently there are only a few chargers to be found in the kingdom. But fear not! They're planning to build 5,000 fast chargers by 2030. That's...ambitious. Until then maybe Tesla should include a complimentary camel with every purchase? Or perhaps a really really long extension cord.
The Thirst is Real
Despite the challenges there's a lot of pent up demand for Teslas in Saudi Arabia. People have been waiting. It's like when Windows 95 came out people were lining up around the block! Hristova said “I always say 'not available makes it desirable'.” So who knows? Maybe Tesla will actually succeed in this desert adventure. I mean if they can make money off dogecoin anything is possible right?

BYD is a force to be reckoned with. Tesla shouldn't underestimate them.

A Tesla Cybertruck cruising through the desert? Now that's a sight I'd pay to see!

I wonder if Tesla will offer a 'sandstorm mode' on their cars?

Ceer Motors might be Tesla's biggest competitor. Local brands always have an advantage.
