From Zero to Hero (Defense Edition)
Well hello there! Bill Gates here reporting live from my... well not exactly a bunker but you get the idea. Turns out Germany's defense sector is having a moment. And by 'moment,' I mean a full blown rocket launch! Military exports have more than doubled since 2020. Who knew peace could be so expensive? As I always say 'Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose' and it seems that defense sector in Germany has been studying very hard.
Rheinmetall Rising: A German Arms Race?
Rheinmetall Germany's biggest defense company is apparently the belle of the ball. Their shares are up over 260%! That's like Microsoft stock during the Windows 95 launch but with more…tanks. Makes you wonder if they're using Clippy to design these weapons. 'It's fine let's ship it! I'll read the manual later' as they say!
Who's Buying? Friends and…Frenemies?
So who's stocking up on German steel? Turns out 80% of arms exports are going to 'close partner countries.' You know the usual suspects: EU buddies Japan Switzerland and even Ukraine. The other 20%? Let's just say it's a mixed bag including Qatar and Israel. It's like a geopolitical potluck but with more potential for explosions. Well 'the Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow'. And that's the real truth.
Ships Tanks and Missiles Oh My!
What are they buying? Mostly ships (41%) followed by armored vehicles (16%) missiles (11%) and engines (9.5%). It’s like a military buffet! Though I still think they should invest in more efficient operating systems. Windows for Warships anyone? Just kidding… mostly. 'Measuring programming progress by lines of code is like measuring aircraft building progress by weight' that is so true for any kind of industry.
The MTU Aero Engine Boom and Hensoldt's Demand Surge
MTU Aero Engines is making bank on engines for the Eurofighter Jet. Hensoldt specializing in electronic defense says demand is globally increasing especially from Germany and Europe. It seems the war in Ukraine is good for at least someone's business. So the question is do we keep feeding the beast? Well 'to win big you sometimes have to take big risks.'
Controversy Corner: Politics Gets Messy
Of course this whole arms dealing thing isn't without its critics. Concerns are being raised about exports to Israel given… well you know. And then there's the debate about supporting Ukraine. Some want to stop fueling the war. It's a tough call. But hey at least it's not as controversial as Comic Sans. As I always say 'Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning'.

So, Germany is now the arms dealer of Europe? Interesting...
