Hello Lover! (Of Trade)

Okay New York. So I couldn't help but wonder... Is this the end of the trade war drama? Because let's face it even Aidan and his furniture building skills couldn't fix the damage this was doing. Apparently the U.S. and China have decided to take a breather a 'pause' if you will in their tariff tango. Remember when Miranda said 'Maybe we can be each other's soul mates'? Well maybe the U.S. and China are trying to be just that...economically speaking of course.

125% to 10%: A Fashionable Discount?

The biggest news? Those 'reciprocal' tariffs are going from a staggering 125% to a much more manageable 10%. It's like finding a Manolo Blahnik sample sale! Except instead of shoes we're talking about you know goods. But before you start celebrating with cosmos remember that the 20% duties on Chinese imports of fentanyl are still kicking around meaning total tariffs on China stand at 30%. Because even in trade there are always strings attached... just like a bad relationship.

Lake Geneva: The Swiss Made Peace?

Apparently this breakthrough happened after some high stakes talks in Switzerland. The U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent even said the venue in Lake Geneva added 'great equanimity' to the process. Equanimity? Sounds like a fancy word for 'calm down and let's talk.' Maybe they should have just ordered some fondue and hashed things out over cheese. Although I bet Samantha would have found a way to turn that into a whole different kind of negotiation...

90 Days of...What?

"We have reached an agreement on a 90 day pause and substantially move down the tariff levels. Both sides on the reciprocal tariffs will move their tariffs down 115%," Bessent said. What will they do with those 90 days? Will they finally binge watch 'Sex and the City'? Will they go on a quest to find the perfect croissant? Only time and more negotiations will tell. But at least the stock market is happy for now. Nasdaq futures are pointing to a 3.6% gain with the S & P 500 futures higher by 2.8% and Dow up by nearly 1,000 points or 2.3%. Cha ching!

Dollar Dollar Bills Y'all

Even the U.S. dollar is getting a little pick me up. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index rose sharply up 1.3% to 101.63. It's like the dollar finally got its confidence back after that awkward encounter with Euro. But will this reprieve last? In the world of trade just like in love you never really know what's coming next.

To Be Continued...

So what does this all mean? Well it means the U.S. and China are still talking. And that's always a good thing right? As for whether this is a real turning point or just another plot twist in the never ending saga of global economics... well that's a story for another day. Until then I'll be here watching the market sipping my Cosmo and wondering: Can two economies ever truly find happily ever after? And more importantly what shoes should I wear to the next trade summit?
