Houston We Have a Problem (Again!)

Well folks it seems my pal Elon is stirring up a bit of a dust storm down in Memphis. Word on the street – or rather in a letter from the Southern Environment Law Center – is that xAI Elon's AI baby might be pushing the envelope with its data center’s energy consumption. Apparently they've got a few more gas turbines humming along than they initially let on. As I always say 'Innovation is moving at a scarily fast pace' and this seems to apply in this case doesn't it?

35 Turbines?! That's More Than My Zune Collection!

Thirty five gas turbines! That's a lot of 'oomph,' even for training an AI to beat ChatGPT. xAI only applied for 15 permits which is the equivalent of an integer overflow in software development resulting in an unexpected number of turbines. Now I'm no tree hugger but even I know that burning all that gas can't be great for the local air. And as a guy that's trying to help eradicate Malaria I can say with some authority that clean air is a great idea.

Grok vs. Air Quality: A Tough Choice

So the long term plan is to tap into the local utility Memphis Light Gas and Water and the Tennessee Valley Authority which is a smart way to go green. The issue is the turbines have an estimated power generating capacity of 421 megawatts which compares to the capacity of an entire TVA power plant the SELC said. It seems xAI needs to decide whether they want to put all their eggs in one basket with Grok or keep residents happy and healthy. And they haven't said when they would plan to shut off the turbines and switch power sources! As I said 'I failed in some subjects in exam but my friend passed in all. Now he is an engineer in Microsoft and I am the owner of Microsoft.' Jokes aside the health of the people is paramount!

Elon in DC: Making America...Less Regulated?

And of course Elon's busy playing policy wonk in D.C. with President Trump. I wonder if slashing regulations includes the ones that keep our air clean? I have to wonder sometimes. I understand the need to remove red tape but protecting the environment shouldn't be considered an inconvenience. Even I the guy who practically invented the paperless office (though I still love a good memo) think we need to be responsible.

Memphis Blues: Residents Sing a Different Tune

The real kicker is how this affects the people of Memphis. Easter May Knox wants to open her windows and breathe clean air! And who can blame her? Money doesn't buy you fresh air folks. (Although I suppose I could try...) As Amanda Garcia an attorney with SELC said "The Shelby County Health Department is the local entity charged with implementing the relevant air permitting requirements and has the authority to hold xAI accountable under existing law."

The Moral of the Story? Don't Be a Jerk

So what's the takeaway here? Even if you're building the next big thing in AI don't forget about the basics: clean air happy neighbors and following the rules. As I always say 'Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one.' And if you're running a massive data center maybe be nice to the local community too. Because at the end of the day 'Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose.' And you know what? Polluting the air? That's a sure way to lose.
