Weekend Warriors and White House Woes
Well folks looks like things in Washington are getting spicy! They're calling it a 'vote a rama' – sounds like a dance off but it's just senators throwing amendments at Trump's big bill like it's a Windows 95 launch. I hear Trump met with some folks or maybe he didn't? The White House is saying one thing and the spokespeople are saying another. Classic Washington! Makes you wonder if they're all running on dial up. As I always say 'Information is power,' but someone's clearly lost the power cord.
Crossing the Aisle... or Just Tripping?
So there's some bipartisan action or at least a few senators willing to risk a primary challenge. Ed Markey is trying to protect rural hospitals from getting the budget axe. Even got a couple of Republicans on board! Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski decided to join the party which is nice. But in the end the amendment didn't pass. It's like when I tried to convince the world Clippy was a good idea. Some things just aren't meant to be.
Amendment Avalanche!
Unlimited amendments huh? Sounds like my inbox on a Monday morning. Senators are just lobbing these things like they're trying to break some kind of record. Most of them won't pass but that's not the point. It's all about sending messages making folks squirm and of course creating attack ads. 'Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can't lose.' Sounds about right for election season.
July 4th Firecracker Deadline
These guys are sweating it to get this done by July 4th. I bet they wish they had Clippy right now to help them stay organized. I'm sure they'll find a way forward. 'We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.' Remember that one.
Thune's Tightrope Walk
Poor Thune! He's running a Senate with margins so thin he could floss with them. Can't afford to lose more than a couple of votes. And Ron Johnson's out there hinting he might jump ship. It's like trying to debug Windows 1.0 with a hammer.
House of (Potential) Horrors
Even if Thune pulls this off the House has to sign off on the Senate's tweaks. And some of those House Republicans are already grumbling. Sounds like they want to return the program to the sender. Oh well they can always try turning it off and on again!
