Clean Your Room Clean Your Cart

Right so Instacart. Another one of these tech companies trying to figure out what it is now that the world's decided to put on pants again and venture out of the house. Fidji Simo she's off to OpenAI probably to teach the algorithms how to properly sort the produce—because let's be honest some of you are choosing avocados based on nothing but pure unadulterated chaos. And now we have Chris Rogers stepping in. Good for him. He's got to pick up the pieces of a company that boomed during the lockdown and is now trying not to become another Beanie Baby. It's a mess but a necessary one. You can't have a society without some semblance of order. And that starts with knowing the difference between a yam and a sweet potato. Get it together folks.

The Lobster and the Ladder

Simo bless her heart says they're building a 'generational company at the intersection of technology and food.' Sounds lofty doesn't it? Like she's trying to justify abandoning ship to the siren song of AI. Rogers meanwhile spouts the usual corporate jargon about 'world class teams' and 'bold visions.' I've heard it all before. The truth is every company wants to be the lobster at the top of the dominance hierarchy. They all want to be seen as the best the most successful the ones who are shaping the future. But remember even the lobster at the top still has to contend with the bottom of the barrel.

Apple of His Eye

Rogers spent 11 years at Apple. Apple! A company that practically invented the art of selling you the same thing with a different name every year. So he's well versed in the dark arts of marketing and innovation. He started at Instacart as VP of Global Retail whatever that means and now he's the big cheese. The question is can he turn Instacart into something more than just a glorified grocery run? Can he give it real lasting value? Or will it just be another flash in the pan a fleeting fancy in the ever churning sea of consumerism?

Beyond Mere Groceries

This whole thing reminds me of the story of Noah's Ark. Except instead of animals we're loading up on kale and quinoa. The pandemic was the flood and Instacart was the ark saving us from the horrors of…gasp…actual human interaction at the grocery store. But now the waters have receded and we're all wondering what to do with ourselves. Can Instacart adapt? Can it become something more than just a delivery service? Can it offer something that makes it indispensable even when we're no longer cowering in our homes afraid of a cough?

The Post Pandemic Pivot

Simo claims they 'not only kept the Covid gains but grew on top of the Covid gains.' Well good for them. But I'm always skeptical of these kinds of pronouncements. Everyone's a winner when the game is rigged in their favor. The real test is whether they can still win when the rules change when the playing field levels out when people start remembering that sunlight and human contact are actually things they enjoy. Rogers he's got to navigate this post pandemic pivot. He's got to convince people that Instacart is still worth their time and money even when they can technically go to the store themselves. It's a tall order but hey at least he's got a nice title.

Meaning and Order in the Aisles

So here we are. Instacart with a new leader trying to find meaning and order in the chaos of the grocery aisles. It's a microcosm of the larger human condition really. We're all just trying to make sense of things trying to create some semblance of stability in a world that seems determined to throw curveballs at us. And whether it's choosing the right tomato or navigating the complexities of corporate leadership the key is to face the unknown with courage competence and a healthy dose of skepticism. Now if you'll excuse me I have a lecture to prepare and a very specific order of steak to grill.
