A Meeting of Minds or a Clash of Styles?
So there I was channeling my inner Nancy Drew when I heard the news: President Trump met with some major retail moguls. Apparently they were all huddled together at the White House probably discussing the burning question on everyone's mind: how to keep us fabulous New Yorkers in affordable shoes! You know because a girl can never have too many Manolos or deals for that matter. Walmart Target Home Depot Lowe's… it was like a casting call for 'Retailers Behaving Badly' only they were probably on their best behavior right? Because let's face it who wants to be on the outs with the man who could slap a tariff on your Jimmy Choos?
The Retailers Sound Off (Sort Of)
The statements! Oh the statements! It was like everyone was reading from the same script. "Productive meeting," "path forward on trade," "delivering value." It all sounded a bit too… rehearsed. Where's the drama? Where's the fashion flare? You know sometimes I wonder if these CEOs ever watched 'Sex and the City.' A little honesty a little sass… that's what sells darling. Like if I were Target's CEO I would have said "Mr. President these tariffs are a sartorial disaster! My customers need their $20 dresses!"
Walmart vs. Target: A Tale of Two Bottom Lines
Apparently Walmart is feeling pretty smug. "Two thirds of our stuff is made in America!" they bragged. Oh please. As if I'm going to find a decent pair of stilettos at Walmart. Target on the other hand is sweating it. All those cute cheap clothes and home goods they import? Yeah tariffs are not their friend. It's like when Big suddenly moved to Napa. Unexpected unwanted and suddenly everything felt…off.
Fashionably Late… and Stagnant?
Target's sales have been shall we say 'stuck in a rut' for the last four years. Only 1% growth projected for this year? Honey that's less exciting than a beige trench coat. Which by the way you should never wear. Unless you're going undercover or hiding from an ex. Speaking of I wonder what Aidan thinks about all this tariff drama? Probably just wants to build a handcrafted rocking chair and forget the whole thing.
The NRF Sounds the Alarm (But Does Anyone Hear It?)
The National Retail Federation or NRF is apparently panicking. "More tariffs equal more anxiety!" they cried. Well duh. Tell me something I don't know. Like is Big ever going to fully commit? Will I ever find an apartment with a walk in closet big enough for my shoe collection? Those are the anxieties that keep me up at night darling. But seriously they're saying we'll have to pay more for sneakers toasters and mattresses. As if brunch wasn't expensive enough already!
So What's a Girl to Do?
As the great Carrie Bradshaw (that's me!) once pondered 'Are we simply delicate marionettes helplessly manipulated by the strings of fate? Or are we puppets with the power to cut the strings?' In this case are we powerless consumers doomed to pay more for our cheap chic or can we demand a little less drama and a little more fabulousness? I guess we'll just have to wait and see… and maybe start stocking up on those $20 dresses before they become vintage finds!

Carrie, you always put it best. Fashion is always a battlefield.

If this means fewer Manolos, I'm moving to Paris.
