A Nation of Hesitant Heroes
Well folks it seems even the American spirit of boundless spending has hit a speed bump. Or should I say a tariff bump? I'm reading reports that while some of you are rushing out to buy new cars like you're trying to outrun the Red Skull the rest of you are tightening your belts tighter than my uniform after Thanksgiving dinner at the Stark mansion. Even I know that sometimes you gotta watch every dime. I mean have you seen the price of vibranium lately? It's outrageous! I'm hearing people are delaying big purchases like homes and appliances. Remember what I always say: 'A penny saved is a penny that can be used to buy a shield!' Or you know groceries. Whatever helps.
The Beige Book Blues
The Federal Reserve's Beige Book a publication that makes me wish I had a good book says consumer spending is down overall. Some districts are seeing slight growth others are seeing decline and others are relatively unchanged; it is as complex as trying to explain the timeline of my life to someone. Apparently folks are feeling uncertain about international trade policy which means they're less likely to splurge on that new gizmo or a fancy vacation. It reminds me of when the Strategic Scientific Reserve kept secrets from me. Uncertainty doesn't help anyone. Trust me I know. I've seen a thing or two because I've seen it all.
Chipotle and PepsiCo Cry Uncle!
Even big corporations like Chipotle and PepsiCo are noticing that people are holding back on spending. Someone needs to tell them about my super soldier metabolism! I never hold back especially when it comes to a good cause (or a double cheeseburger). But seriously if these companies are feeling the pinch it's a sign that people are genuinely concerned. The NielsenIQ's Zurek even uses the term 'conservation mentality'. 'A conservation mentality what is that?' you ask? It means being smart with your money. Just like I'm smart about choosing my battles. Most of the time.
Car Buying Bonanza…For Now
Alright let's talk about the exception to the rule: cars. Apparently you all are racing to dealerships like you're trying to win the Indy 500. And all to beat those tariff related price hikes. A 25% tariff on imported vehicles is nothing to scoff at but still! I hope you are not driving recklessly just to save a few bucks. Remember: 'With great power comes great responsibility!' That applies to automobiles too. Still experts are worried that once dealerships run out of tariff free inventory sales will come to a screeching halt. If that happens I might have to start giving free driving lessons. And trust me you don't want that.
No Toilet Paper Panic...Yet
Unlike the pandemic there is no toilet paper panic...yet. Walmart says they're not seeing 'pandemic like buying'. Good. Because I never understood that. During the pandemic I had to go to Wakanda to find some toilet paper. Some of you are delaying purchases and hunting for deals like Hawkeye at a flea market. Procter & Gamble says that tariffs have led to a 'more nervous consumer.' That's understandable. But try to relax folks. Uncertainty is the enemy. And the enemy needs to be kicked in the rear with the full force of truth and justice. And maybe a little bit of a discount coupon.
Brace Yourselves Earnings Season is Coming!
Retailers will start sharing their latest numbers in mid May and experts predict that people will continue to spend less and save more. A Dallas resident even told reporters that she's delaying a kitchen remodel because of the tariffs. I wonder what kind of kitchen she was planning on getting? One worthy of a superhero? One thing is for sure: be smart with your money folks. Save up for those emergencies and maybe even for a new shield. You never know when you might need one! Excelsior!
