A Familiar Worrying Tune
Ah the Middle East. A region that seems perpetually caught in a rather dramatic waltz. Today we find ourselves observing yet another spirited exchange between Israel and Iran a clash that's sending ripples far beyond their borders. It appears that after an Israeli strike against Iran Tehran has responded with a volley of missiles some allegedly finding their mark in Tel Aviv Jerusalem and even near the refinery in Haifa. One can only imagine the disruption this causes; it's rather like disturbing a well established beehive isn't it?
The Art of Defense Or Lack Thereof
Iran's Revolutionary Guard boast of 'innovative methods' that have allegedly confounded Israel's Iron Dome. It's a bit like watching a cunning chameleon outwit a seasoned predator. The Iron Dome usually so reliable appears to be facing a rather stern test. As I always say 'Cherish the natural world because you're a part of it and you depend on it.' Perhaps these nations should reflect on that and consider their shared dependence on this planet.
Markets in a Flutter: Oil and Gold in a Tizzy
The markets those skittish creatures are naturally in a bit of a flutter. Oil prices predictably are retaining their gains though with a slight wobble as I write this. Gold that traditional safe haven is also showing signs of nerves having retreated slightly from its recent peak. It’s a delicate dance this interplay between geopolitical tensions and economic realities. One misstep and the whole ecosystem could be thrown into disarray.
A Glimmer of Hope? Or Just Wishful Thinking?
Interestingly some market observers are suggesting that the muted reaction might be due to hopes for a swift resolution. One chap at Citigroup even floated the idea of bringing Iran to the table. Oh to be so optimistic! It reminds me of the time I saw a dung beetle attempting to roll a boulder uphill. Determination is admirable but sometimes the task at hand is simply too monumental.
Defense Minister's Strong Words
Meanwhile the rhetoric escalates. Israel's Defense Minister in a rather strongly worded social media post suggests that the residents of Tehran will 'pay the price.' One shudders to think what that might entail. It’s a far cry from the peaceful meadows of the Serengeti isn't it? A stark reminder that not all of nature's creatures are inclined towards harmony.
Enter the United States: A Critical Junction
And so we arrive at the role of the United States. A key player no doubt given its close ties to Israel and its somewhat tumultuous relationship with Iran. With nuclear deal talks recently scuttled and memories of President Trump's hard line stance still fresh Washington's next move is being watched with bated breath. Let us hope that cool heads prevail and that a path towards de escalation can be found. After all as I've often said 'It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living.' Surely preserving life should be the priority for all involved.
