Hello West Point ers!
So there I was perched on my couch with a cosmo (okay maybe it was a skinny margarita—don't judge!) scrolling through the news when I stumbled upon something that made me clutch my pearls harder than I do when Big gets near a commitment. Apparently Donald Trump gave a commencement speech at West Point and darling it was... well let's just say it was a *lewk*.
A Golden Age or a Gilded Cage?
Trump sporting his signature red 'Make America Great Again' hat declared that these graduates were entering the "golden age of America." Golden huh? Like a really expensive spray tan or more like a 'golden shower'? Sorry couldn't help myself! He boasted about rebuilding the military "like nobody has ever rebuilt it before." It all felt a little… Carrie Bradshaw goes to war.
America First Last and Always?
The speech had all the familiar Trumpian flavors: "America First" worldview promises of military domination and a good old fashioned pat on the back. He even threw some shade at previous administrations for sending troops on “nation building crusades." It was like watching an episode of 'Sex and the City' where Miranda suddenly becomes a Republican. Confusing to say the least.
DEI? More Like 'DIE'!
But here's where things get a little more complicated than a Samantha Jones relationship. Trump praised his administration's crackdown on diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) programs. Apparently West Point has axed cultural clubs and even removed books mentioning racism or sexism from its libraries. As I wrote once "Maybe mistakes are what make our fate... without them what would shape our lives?" But this felt less like a mistake and more like a deliberate erasure. Is this making America great or just… making it beige?
Respect... Or Fear?
Trump insisted that the U.S. military is now "respected more than any army anywhere in the world." But I couldn't help but wonder is it respect or is it fear? Are we aiming for admiration or just plain intimidation? And what does it all mean for the future of these young officers? Are they leading an army into a 'Golden Age' or a future fraught with division? As Big always said "Well isn't that special!"
Couldnt Help But Wonder...
So as I sip my cosmo (okay still the skinny margarita!) I can't help but wonder: In a world obsessed with power and rebuilding where do we find the space for empathy understanding and well frankly a good pair of Manolo Blahniks? Because darling even in a 'Golden Age' a girl still needs her shoes.
