It's a gathering of the bright and the innovative much like a swarm of bees buzzing around a particularly enticing flower. But this flower alas is surrounded by thorny issues – trade tensions with the United States are still simmering. President Trump may have given TikTok a temporary stay of execution but the underlying unease persists. As I've often said 'an understanding of the natural world and what's in it is a source of not only a great curiosity but great fulfillment'. One can only hope that understanding prevails in these delicate negotiations.

Closer to home in Berlin the Day of Industry conference shines a spotlight on Germany's economic prowess. Europe's engine of growth they call it! And indeed forecasts are looking up. Chancellor Friedrich Merz seems to have navigated a visit to President Trump's White House without too much… friction. But lurking in the shadows are the costs of those pesky import tariffs. It seems even the mighty German auto industry is feeling the pinch. Tariffs cost the automotive industry around 500 million euros will this continue? Only time will tell.
