A Chill in the Air

Ah the consumer. A fascinating creature indeed. One moment they're merrily spending the next they're huddled in their burrows counting pennies. And according to the latest readings it seems they're feeling rather… chilly. The Consumer Confidence Index a barometer of our economic mood has plunged to a level not seen in nearly five years. One can almost hear the whispers of discontent rustling through the financial savannah. The numbers tell a grim tale and as we know numbers never lie unlike some politicians I could name.

Future Shock

But it's not just the present that has these consumers rattled. It's the future! Their expectations for the next six months have taken a nosedive reaching depths not plumbed since October 2011. A decline they say is consistent with a recession. 'Pervasive pessimism,' one economist calls it. Indeed! One might even suggest they're starting to view the economic landscape with the same dread I reserve for encountering a particularly aggressive Komodo dragon on a nature trail.

The Job Jungle

And what pray tell is causing this sudden bout of economic melancholy? Why the job market of course! The percentage of consumers expecting employment to decline in the next six months is alarmingly high. The job market is a harsh mistress after all. The number of those finding jobs 'hard to get' has risen while those spotting 'plentiful' opportunities has dwindled. It's a veritable game of survival out there!

Tariffs: An Unwelcome Guest

But there's more! Lurking in the shadows like a cunning predator are tariffs. These import taxes once a mere annoyance are now a major source of anxiety. Recession expectations have surged to a two year high fueled by this very worry. It's as if the delicate ecosystem of the economy is being disrupted by an invasive species. Nature and indeed the economy abhors a vacuum and it seems something unpleasant is rushing to fill this one.

A Glimmer of Hope?

Now it's not all doom and gloom mind you. Layoffs have actually fallen a small silver lining in this otherwise stormy economic cloud. One must always look for the light even when surrounded by darkness. And just as a tiny seed can sprout into a mighty tree perhaps this small improvement can blossom into a full fledged recovery. It's happened before after all.

The Specter of Uncertainty

Alas the overall picture remains one of uncertainty. Job postings are down government jobs are shrinking and even the stock market is looking rather… unstable. Inflation expectations are surging. It is a challenging time to be sure. But as we've learned from observing the natural world resilience is key. Let us hope that the consumer and the economy as a whole can weather this storm and emerge stronger on the other side. After all life finds a way. And so too I hope will prosperity.
