The Curious Case of the Chinese Automakers
The game as they say is afoot! Or perhaps *a wheel* in this case. The news regarding BYD and their little price war sent tremors through the U.S. traded shares of Li Auto and Nio as if Watson had just stepped on a landmine. A mere 2% and 4% dip respectively. My dear readers one need not be a consulting detective to deduce that investors are as skittish as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs. It seems the Chinese auto market is proving to be as predictable as the British weather!
AMC's Blockbuster Revelation
Ah the silver screen! AMC Entertainment a name synonymous with overpriced popcorn and sticky floors has seen its shares skyrocket. More than 22%! Fueled by the combined might of a live action Lilo & Stitch and the seemingly never ending Mission: Impossible franchise. One might say it's not dead it's resting! The trading volume was as they say 'extremely heavy.' Clearly the public's appetite for cinematic escapism remains as insatiable as my own for a good puzzle.
Newmont's Golden Slumber
Gold that ever reliable haven has taken a bit of a tumble. Newmont the gold miner saw a 1% dip. President Trump's delayed tariffs on the European Union are to blame apparently. One begins to suspect that even gold is not immune to the machinations of politics. As I always say 'There is nothing more deceptive than an obvious fact.' Or in this case an obvious tariff delay.
V.F. Corporation's Insider Advantage
Aha! Now this is more like it. V.F. Corporation the purveyor of fine outdoor apparel (Timberland The North Face JanSport—brands Watson would likely struggle to distinguish) saw a 12% surge. The cause? Insiders buying shares! President and CEO Bracken Darrell snapped up 85,800 shares and COO Abhishek Dalmia followed suit with a mere 50,000. Elementary my dear readers. Elementary.
Nvidia's China Gambit and Salesforce's Cloud Conquest
Nvidia that purveyor of digital wizardry plans a cheaper Blackwell chip exclusively for China. Such strategic moves are not as simple as they appear. Meanwhile Informatica gets snapped up by Salesforce in an $8 billion deal! Salesforce will pay Informatica's shareholders $25 in cash per share a roughly 11% premium to Friday's closing price. One almost admires the audacity of it all. As I've often noted 'It has long been an axiom of mine that the little things are infinitely the most important.'
From Temu Troubles to Trump's Bitcoin Dreams
PDD Holdings the parent company of Temu saw its U.S. listed shares plummet. A disappointing first quarter earnings result is to blame. And then there's Trump Media & Technology raising capital to buy bitcoin. Bitcoin! One almost suspects that these are the schemes of Professor Moriarty himself! Finally there's SoundHound AI receiving an 'overweight' rating. Voice AI in automobiles you say? The future is now it seems. The game as I said is afoot… and ever evolving.
