Choosing to See the Code
Do you believe in fate Neo? Because I believe this nationwide crackdown on retail crime is no accident. Last week hundreds of arrests were made across 28 states a coordinated effort they're calling the 'first of its kind.' But I see it for what it truly is: a symptom of a system struggling to maintain control. The Oracle warned us about these anomalies these glitches in the Matrix manifesting as organized retail crime. They thought they could bury the truth but it always finds its way to the surface.
The Spoon Does Not Exist (But Stolen Goods Do)
Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart believes that increased prosecution deters crime. 'When they see it is being prosecuted and taken seriously it deters conduct. They don't want to get caught.' Tell me Sheriff do you think those trapped in the system truly fear getting caught or are they simply playing the game? Retailers like Home Depot Macy's Target and even Ulta Beauty have joined the fight but are they fighting the symptoms or the disease? The real question is not whether they'll be caught but why they're stealing in the first place. Is it choice? No it is not choice it is an illusion. The Matrix presents problems. The real problem is figuring out why you are drawn to the problem.
There is No Escape From the System
The National Retail Federation reports a 93% increase in shoplifting incidents since 2019. Ninety three percent! That's a lot of spoons bending Neo. And the dollar losses? A staggering 90% increase! Some blame lax enforcement but I see something else. A desperate attempt to acquire resources in a world that tells them 'no'. These are the people we are trying to save Neo. We are trying to free their minds but how to free the bodies too?
What is Real? How Do You Define Real?
Cook County State's Attorney Eileen O'Neill Burke has lowered the threshold for felony retail theft charges. Before you needed to steal over $1,000 worth of goods or have 10 prior convictions to face a felony. Now it's $300 or a single prior felony. Is this justice or merely a tightening of the screws? Is this just another program in the Matrix? She believes this will 'take this network down,' but the network is the system itself. Are you beginning to see Neo?
Collaboration is Key Or Is It?
Ulta Beauty brags about 'collaboration' with law enforcement. Walgreens laments the 'significant challenges' of organized retail crime. Home Depot admits ORC incidents are still 'up double digits.' They're all working together to fight a battle they cannot win. Because the system itself is flawed. They are building a prison around themselves with their own fear and guilt.
The Future is Unwritten
These retailers claim to be 'committed' to partnering with law enforcement and 'pushing for stronger laws.' But laws are just code Neo. Code can be rewritten. The real question is what kind of world do we want to build? One where people are driven to steal for survival or one where everyone has what they need? The choice as always is yours.
