Follow the White Chocolate Rabbit?
I must inform you Neo the world you perceive is but a construct. Within this construct a disturbance. Annie Park co owner of Sarah's Handmade Ice Cream a chain in the D.C. area faces a dilemma: cocoa prices already high are soaring. This is not a glitch; it is a choice a system of control manifesting as tariffs and inflation. Orange chocolate alas is the first casualty. "We're finding ways to be creative," she says. But is creativity enough when the Architect is playing games with the ingredients of your frozen dessert?
The Oracle's Scoop: A Bitter Forecast
The Trump administration's tariffs a 10% levy on goods from most countries and a staggering 145% on Chinese imports are the agents of this disruption. Small businesses the very code upon which this world is built are feeling the pressure. Park admits "We're trying to decide what the best action is." The Oracle would advise: Know thyself and know thy enemy. In this case the enemy is an economic policy that threatens to melt your favorite flavor away. It is as if the system is screaming there is no chocolate.
There is No Spoon... Or Orange Chocolate
It's not just cocoa Neo. Sugar chocolate chips even customized cups and T shirts – all caught in the crossfire. Park anticipated disruptions and stocked up but cocoa being perishable cannot be so easily hoarded. This is a truth bomb more painful than realizing your entire existence is a computer simulation. "You think this is a global issue," Park says "But on a day to day [basis] small local families are the ones paying for it." Indeed Neo the ripple effects are felt most acutely at the individual level. As always.
The Blue Pill or the Red Velvet Cake?
Ji Hye Kim chef and owner of Miss Kim in Ann Arbor faces a similar predicament. Essential Korean pantry staples are often unavailable domestically at the required quality or scale. "We buy as much local American products as we can," Kim states. "But for some that's not possible." It's a choice between supporting local or sacrificing the authenticity of her creations. A bitter choice akin to choosing between ignorance and knowledge. What is real? How do you define 'real'?
Knock Knock Tariff Man!
Tom Madrecki of the Consumer Brands Association aptly describes the situation: "Especially for products that aren't available here – coffee cocoa tropical fruits – a tariff is just raising a cost and the cost has to go somewhere." The cost Neo is inevitably passed down creating a chain reaction of rising prices and potential business closures. The system demands balance and sometimes that balance comes at a steep price a price paid in orange chocolate.
The Matrix Reloaded... with a Price Hike?
Kim fears that raising prices may drive customers away. "It's like you're trying to juggle – and somebody throws a basketball in your face," she laments. The analogy is fitting Neo. The system like the Agents is relentless ever present and always trying to knock you down. She hears anxieties growing at an industry level. As she puts it "People are closing or thinking about closing." Now more than ever we need to ask ourselves what choice are we making? Are we going to let the system win or are we going to find a way to bend the spoon? One ice cream cone at a time.
