Wake Up Investor. The System is Failing...
They say ignorance is bliss but in the Matrix – I mean the 'market' – ignorance is a liability. Wolfe Research through their chief strategist Chris Senyek has offered us a glimpse behind the curtain. They foresee a potential descent of the S&P 500 to as low as 3,700 if the 'mild recession' they speak of materializes. Do you hear that Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability. Or you know a really bad day on Wall Street.
Choose Your Own (Financial) Adventure!
The numbers are stark: a potential 30 37% drop from the year's starting point. Remember the S&P 500 has already had a rough year with a brief bear market encounter triggered by… tariffs. Ah tariffs. The agents of this reality ever meddling with the code. The index is currently hovering a mere illusion of stability while we wait for the architects of trade agreements to decide our fate. Red pill blue pill indeed. Only this time it's red ink or… slightly less red ink?
Resistance is Futile... Or is it?
Some technical strategist speaks of a 'resistance' at 5,500. Resistance you say? Familiar territory. But remember “There is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path.” The S&P 500 is currently trading below this key level trapped in a digital cage. The question is can we break free?
Earnings? What Earnings?
Senyek fears the dreaded domino effect: recession weakened corporate earnings due to tariffs (those pesky Agents again!) and a potential 15% drop in S&P 500 earnings per share for 2025. They predict earnings could plummet to $225. An economic contraction they warn. But I say what is 'economic contraction' but another illusion projected onto our senses? Is this real life? Is this just fantasy? Caught in a landslide no escape from reality!
The Oracle Foresees... a Sale!
If this 'mild recession' turns into a full blown migraine P/E ratios will compress. Using historical averages Senyek suggests a range of 3,700 to 4,100 for the S&P 500. A sale you might say. But is it a genuine bargain or simply rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic? That my friends depends on whether you believe the spoon can be bent.
