¡Ay Caramba! Tariffs? No Problema (Maybe)!
Hola amigos! Leo Messi here trading my cleats for a keyboard (briefly don't worry I'll be back on the pitch soon!). I stumbled upon this news about Williams Sonoma and their CEO Laura Alber dealing with those tricky tariffs. She told CNBC's Jim Cramer they've been "busy." Busy like me trying to explain offside to my teammates sometimes! She said "It's important to have that flexible mindset but also to have options in sourcing." Sounds like my approach to a crowded penalty box: always have a plan B and maybe a cheeky nutmeg up your sleeve!
Double the Margin Double the Fun!
This Alber lady is smart though. She's talking about different sourcing alternatives. Like when I'm marked by two defenders – I pass! Or you know maybe I dribble through them. Depends on the mood. Apparently Williams Sonoma even owns Pottery Barn and West Elm. So they're like the Barcelona of home goods – a whole team of brands working together. The article mentions they beat earnings and revenue but missed on gross margins. It's like scoring a hat trick but missing a penalty – still a good day but could've been better! Alber emphasized that from 2019 to today they more than doubled their operating margin. ¡Qué bárbaro! That's like going from the middle of the table to winning La Liga twice in a row!
Made in the USA? ¡Dale!
Alber wants to do more manufacturing in the U.S. She even mentioned their home improvement brand Rejuvenation which is made in Oregon. ¡Dale! That's the spirit! It's like when I see a young player coming up through La Masia – you want to see the talent from home shine. "Rejuvenation is Williams Sonoma's fastest growing small brand," Alber said. This sounds like a promising youngster breaking into the first team.
Flat is the New Up (According to Someone)
She also said their operating margin would be flat this year. Okay maybe not as exciting as a bicycle kick but in this economy flat is the new up right? According to Alber this speaks to "the power of our operating model our multichannel platform and our sourcing structure," which affords the company flexibility. Flexibility is key whether you're weaving through defenders or navigating the choppy waters of international trade.
The Messi Operating Model: Pass Dribble Score...Repeat!
This Alber lady reminds me of Pep Guardiola (former FC Barcelona coach) a little bit. Always talking about structure and operating models. Me? I just try to put the ball in the back of the net. But hey whatever works right? Just like I adapted my game over the years Williams Sonoma is evolving to meet new challenges. They're facing tariffs but they're not backing down.
Back to the Pitch...For Now!
So there you have it. Williams Sonoma is dribbling around those tariffs like I dribble around defenders. It's not always pretty but they're finding a way to keep moving forward. Now if you'll excuse me I have a game to win. ¡Visca el Barça... and good luck to Williams Sonoma!
