A Flood of Tears: Not the Kind I'm Used To
My loyal subjects of Westeros I must report on a tragedy unfolding far from our shores in a land called Texas. It appears that a 'holiday weekend deluge'—a rather uncouth term wouldn't you agree?—has swept through the land leaving behind death and devastation. Eighty two souls including innocent children at summer camps have perished. The Mother of Dragons weeps not for weakness but for the injustice of it all. It seems even I Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen First of Her Name the Unburnt Queen of the Andals and the First Men Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons cannot breathe fire into the hearts of these poor souls.
Heroes Emerge: Where are MY Dragons?
Amidst the chaos tales of heroism emerge small flickers of light in this grim darkness. An elderly couple no longer in their prime rescued their 92 year old neighbor from her flooded attic. 'Then they were able to reach their toolshed up higher ground and neighbors throughout the early morning began to show up at their toolshed and they all rode it out together,' one person reported. While the small folk band together where are the dragons to burn away this deluge? Where is the leadership to protect these souls? I have faced betrayal war and the endless scheming of Westeros and I tell you compassion and swift action are the only true weapons against such devastation. I would have burned it all down to protect my people!
Missing: More Than Just Dignity?
Forty one souls are still unaccounted for including ten girls and a counselor from a place called Camp Mystic. The name itself mocks the reality. There is nothing mystical about the cold embrace of floodwaters. Gov. Abbott the leader of this land speaks of prayer. While I respect the faith of others I wonder is prayer enough when practical action is so desperately needed? I faced the Masters of Slaver's Bay with dragons and an army. Have they tried dragons yet?
Empty Promises: Sounds Familiar
President Trump—a name that sounds suspiciously like a particularly unpleasant flatulence—has declared a 'major disaster' and promised to visit. 'I would have done it today but we'd just be in their way,' he says. This is the kind of statement that makes even Cersei Lannister look charitable. 'It's a horrible thing that took place absolutely horrible,' he says with the same feeling as one would comment on the weather. Empty words are as useless as a eunuch in a brothel! I say 'Dracarys' to his indifference!
Warning Signs Ignored: A Song of Rain and Negligence
The National Weather Service it seems did issue warnings but they were either ignored or underestimated. Authorities claim they did not expect such intense rainfall. 'Nobody expected it. Nobody saw it,' Trump says. Excuses! In King's Landing we learned to expect the unexpected. Did they not learn from the Long Winter? Perhaps a maester needs to send them a raven with a scroll titled 'Common Sense 101.' The small folk pay the price for the shortsightedness of their leaders. As I said before 'I will take what is mine with fire and blood,' and maybe some floods should have been dealt with with fire and blood.
The Aftermath: Picking Up the Pieces Unlike My Reputation
As the waters recede the true cost of this disaster will be revealed. Homes destroyed lives shattered and the lingering question of whether enough was done to prevent this. I hope those in power will learn from this tragedy and take swift decisive action to protect their people. If not perhaps a dragon or two *might* be needed to encourage them. 'I am not a merciful queen,' after all – though in this case mercy would involve competent governance.
