Is the U.S. playing hard to get, or are these trade talks just another episode of 'he said, she said' in the White House?
Is the U.S. playing hard to get, or are these trade talks just another episode of 'he said, she said' in the White House?

Deal or No Deal? That is the Question

Okay so picture this: I'm at a fabulous cocktail party Manolos sparkling under the disco ball and suddenly everyone's buzzing about Trump's latest pronouncements. Turns out the President in a move as surprising as finding a sale at Bergdorf's declared the U.S. doesn't *need* to sign trade deals. Like what?! It's like saying you don't need cosmos at a 'Sex and the City' marathon. Essential darling essential! According to sources Trump grumbled during a meeting with Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney about the incessant questions about when these deals would materialize. "We don't have to sign deals they have to sign deals with us," he apparently said. Talk about playing hard to get. But is it a power move or just plain confusing?

The 'Close' But Not Quite Kiss

For weeks the White House has been teasing potential trade agreements like a hot new romance. Everyone was saying that various countries were begging for a bilateral trade talk with the United States yet the Trump administration is yet to announce any formal agreements or frameworks. It's like being promised a diamond ring and getting a friendship bracelet. Officials have been running around whispering sweet nothings about how close these deals are yet nothing seems to materialize. I wonder is it all just a smokescreen? Maybe the real deal is the drama itself. After all a little suspense keeps things interesting doesn't it?

He Said She Said: A Trade Talk Telenovela

Just when you thought you had it figured out the narrative twists. Trump's Treasury Secretary on CNBC proclaimed the U.S. was "very close to some deals." Then Trump himself hinted at deals rolling out this week saying "At the end I'm setting the deal." It's enough to give you whiplash! It's like trying to decipher Mr. Big's feelings – one minute he's there the next he's MIA. According to reports Trump even mentioned "potential deals" with India South Korea and Japan. But then in true political fashion he seemingly threw his own aides under the bus blaming them for overpromising. Oh the drama! It is just like the drama between Samantha and Richard Wright when Samantha got too attached.

Super Luxury Store: Now Open for Business?

According to Trump the U.S. should be seen as a "super luxury store a store that has the goods." Well honey New York is already a super luxury store! But the U.S. market does not need price tags on people thank you very much! It has been a place of refuge for so many people to come and shop for their dream lives. In any case with that statement it does seem like the US is trying to set the price that people are going to have to pay to shop in the United States. Now I love a good splurge at Gucci as much as the next girl but are we really reducing complex international relations to a shopping spree? I am sorry to say that it is not as romantic as it sounds.

Market Mayhem: Heels and High Anxiety

Unsurprisingly Trump's comments sent the markets tumbling. Investors and business leaders are clutching their pearls desperately hoping for these bilateral agreements to materialize before the tariff induced trade slowdown hits like a bad hangover. It's like realizing you've spent your rent money on a pair of Louboutins – exciting at first but deeply unsettling later. Are we heading for a financial fashion faux pas? Only time will tell.

The Unanswered Question: Where's the Deal?

So here we are with more questions than answers. Are these trade deals real or just a figment of the White House's imagination? Is the U.S. playing a strategic game or simply winging it? As I sit here nursing my cosmopolitan and pondering the mysteries of the universe (and men) one thing is clear: in the world of trade deals just like in love sometimes the most exciting part is the chase. But eventually you need to know what you are getting! Now if you'll excuse me I need to check for a good sale to keep me entertained in the meantime.
