The Donald and the Dirndl: A Transatlantic Trade Truce?
So I'm sitting at my desk Manolos tapping impatiently when the news breaks: Trump's threatened to slap a 50% tariff on the EU! Fifty percent! That's like saying you can only have *half* a Cosmo. Unthinkable! Apparently the EU was being as Donald put it 'very difficult to deal with.' I mean aren't we all darling? Especially when it comes to finding the perfect shade of lipstick.
Stoxx and the City: A Market Mambo
The European markets bless their cotton socks were all over the place. The Stoxx 600 jumped 1% a collective sigh of relief echoing from Paris to Berlin. It's like when Mr. Big finally said 'I love you' – a brief moment of euphoria before the inevitable crisis. French stocks rose and Germany's DAX practically yodeled with joy. Even the auto industry usually trembling at the thought of more tariffs bounced back. After all what’s Paris without a little European auto right?
BMW Mercedes and the Big Apple Blues
Speaking of cars German carmakers were having a party. BMW and Mercedes Benz were up and Volkswagen well it was practically doing the polka. It seems these companies are as tariff sensitive as I am to a bad hair day. And you know what that means darling? A little less financial stress is always a win!
Zealand Pharma: The Rising Star (and the Price of Hope)
Meanwhile Zealand Pharma was the belle of the ball their shares soaring. Some analyst Prakhar Agrawal said it was 'trading at a meaningful valuation disconnect.' Translation: it's a good deal. Which reminds me Samantha once told me 'If I worried about what every b**** in New York was saying about me I'd never leave the house!' Maybe I should invest.
Von der Leyen to the Rescue: A Tweet Heard 'Round the World
But then like a plot twist in a bad rom com Trump delayed the tariffs. Turns out he had a chat with Ursula von der Leyen who apparently convinced him to hold off. She even posted about it on X. X formerly Twitter still feels weird to say. I mean what is the world coming to? But she assured everyone they're ready to 'advance talks swiftly and decisively.' Which in EU speak probably means 'we'll get back to you in six months.'
Memorial Day and Manolos: What's a Girl to Do?
So as the U.S. celebrated Memorial Day and Wall Street took a breather I couldn't help but wonder... Is this just a temporary reprieve? Will those tariffs still come crashing down threatening my ability to buy designer shoes? Or is this the beginning of a beautiful tariff free friendship? Only time and perhaps a few more Cosmopolitans will tell. Now if you'll excuse me I need to check if there's a sale on Manolos. A girl's gotta prepare for anything after all.
