A Weekend Detente?
So I couldn't help but wonder... are international relations just like dating in your 30s? One minute you're hot the next you're iced. This past weekend it was all about Trump and his on again off again relationship with European tariffs. He threatened a 50% tariff then he delayed it after a call from Ursula von der Leyen. It was like when Big would suddenly reappear after weeks of silence. You're relieved but also… slightly annoyed. It seems that everyone is doing 'The delay dance'! Just like my relationship with commitment.
Stoxx and the City
European shares darling they were *up*. The Stoxx 600 had a provisional happy ending rising 1% and the French CAC 40 and Germany's DAX were feeling the love too. It was like finding a Manolo Blahnik on sale – unexpected and utterly delightful. But can the Markets survive the 'Trump rollercoaster'? I need answers!
Autos: A Bumpy Ride
Now the auto industry. Talk about a tumultuous relationship! They rebounded after a tough session but they're still sensitive to Trump's tariff threats. It's like being in a relationship with a commitment phobe: you're always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Will the market find it's soulmate? Only time will tell...
German Engineering vs. American Policy
BMW Mercedes Benz Volkswagen – they all saw gains. It's like they're saying "We're German engineering we can survive anything!" But can they survive American trade policy? That my dear readers is the billion dollar question. I need to ponder on this whilst sipping my Cosmopolitan...
Zealand Pharma: The Stock Market's New 'It' Girl?
And then there's Zealand Pharma climbing to the top of the Stoxx 600. They had a good report and suddenly everyone's interested. It's like when you wear a new dress and everyone wants to know where you got it. They are the 'It' girl of the moment will their luck change?
Is This Just a Summer Fling?
So what does it all mean? Well for now European markets are enjoying a reprieve. But with Trump delaying tariffs only until July 9 it feels a bit like a summer fling. Fun while it lasts but with an expiration date looming. As I always say “Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate.” But what if the fate of the European economy depends on the whims of one man's Truth Social account? I need a drink...and maybe a new pair of shoes to ponder this.
