From Spectacles to Specs: A Rose by Any Other Name?
Darling in New York you're always looking for the next big thing the accessory that screams 'I'm fabulous and I know it.' So when Snap announced they're ditching 'Spectacles' for 'Specs' in 2026 I couldn't help but wonder: is this just a name change or a sign of something...spec tacular? They say these babies will let you interact with digital images overlaid on reality. It's like having a permanent Instagram filter on life! But will it make my brunches more 'grammable? Only time will tell and darlings time is money which I don't have!
Smaller Lighter and Probably Still Expensive
Apparently these new Specs will be smaller and lighter. Which is great because the last thing I need is more baggage even fashionable baggage. No price or launch date yet but let's be real in this city everything comes with a price. Whether it's the rent controlled apartment that's falling apart or the Manolos that cost more than my therapist (and trust me she's expensive!) there's always a catch. But just like my search for the perfect cosmopolitian I'm willing to pay anything.
Developers Get AI d Up!
Now here's where things get technical. Snap is letting developers use Google's Gemini AI models. Apparently this gives them more options to build AR apps. All I know is I need an app that can automatically match my shoes to my handbag no matter how many cosmopolitans I've had. Is that too much to ask? I mean I have writers block and the robots can help me!
From Silly Videos to Serious Competition
Remember when Snap's first Spectacles just shot short videos? It was cute like a baby chihuahua in a designer sweater. But now the AR glasses world is like a cat fight at a sample sale. Apple's Vision Pro Meta's Quest and Ray Ban Meta smartglasses…everyone's throwing their Louboutins in the ring. Can Snap really compete? Or will they end up like a forgotten trend gathering dust in the back of my closet next to that unfortunate fanny pack?
The Warby Parker of It All
And speaking of competition Google is teaming up with Warby Parker. Warby Parker darling those little glasses that make all the hipsters look like they're attending a book club at all times. Honestly its a little scary my friends are getting older but I'm staying 35 for life. It's like being stuck in an episode of 'The Twilight Zone,' only instead of Rod Serling it's Anna Wintour judging my outfit.
The Future is Now but Will it Match My Outfit?
So what does this all mean for us the fashion forward technologically challenged New Yorkers? It means the future is here darling and it's wearing augmented reality glasses. But the real question is: will these Specs help me see my future? Will they lead me to a closet full of designer shoes and a man who actually gets my shoe obsession? Only time and maybe a really good AI will tell. As I always say 'Maybe our girlfriends are our soulmates.' So maybe I should just invest in matching Specs for me and Miranda.
