A Latte Trouble?
Darling sometimes life hands you a lukewarm latte when you're expecting a venti cappuccino. Starbucks my beloved purveyor of caffeine fueled inspiration recently reported earnings that were shall we say less than fabulous. It seems Wall Street expected more foam and got… well mostly milk. Earnings per share were a mere 41 cents darling not the dazzling 49 cents everyone craved. It’s like showing up to a party in last season's Prada – still chic but not quite the statement.
Net Losses Not Net Profits!
Net income took a tumble tumbling faster than me after one too many cosmos. From a respectable $772.4 million last year to a comparatively paltry $384.2 million. It’s enough to make even the most seasoned shopper reach for their Xanax. And while net sales did inch up a minuscule 2% it wasn't enough to compensate for the financial devastation felt! Is this the end of the Starbucks we know and love? Will we have to start making coffee at home? God forbid!
The Same Store Sales Saga: A Never Ending Downward Spiral?
For five whole quarters the same store sales have been slipping faster than my grip on a Birkin bag in a sample sale frenzy. Seems even my fellow New Yorkers are trading their Frappuccinos for… cheaper options. Cheaper options! The very thought sends shivers down my spine. Is this a sign of the apocalypse? Are we all doomed to a life of instant coffee and questionable pastries? I shudder to think.
Back to Basics: A Brewing Comeback?
But fear not my fabulous friends because there's a new sheriff in town – CEO Brian Niccol who looks like a total Ken Doll and he's got a plan! A "Back to Starbucks" plan no less! Apparently the key is to focus on the coffee the experience and dare I say the customer. It's like going back to the little black dress – simple classic and always in style. Will it work? Only time will tell but I'm willing to give them a chance mostly because I can't imagine my life without a Caramel Macchiato. Like shoes Starbucks is part of my identity.
China's Flat Line: A Cup Half Empty?
Even in China the sales were as flat as my hair after a humid summer day. Lower average ticket prices offset transaction growth. It's like dating a man who's generous with compliments but stingy with the diamonds. Ultimately disappointing but maybe I need to give it a chance!?
So What Happens Next?
So darling readers the question remains: Can Starbucks pull off this turnaround or will it become another cautionary tale of corporate overreach? I for one am cautiously optimistic. After all as I always say “Maybe our mistakes are what make our fate.” And who knows maybe a little less froth and a little more substance is exactly what this coffee giant needs.
