From Runways to Rough Seas?

Darling sometimes life is just a series of choices. Do I wear the Manolos or the Pradas? Do I stay in Manhattan or escape to the Hamptons? But then BAM! News hits that Greta Thunberg our favourite Swedish climate crusader has traded her eco friendly ride for a British flagged yacht named 'Madleen'. Suddenly I'm thinking 'Could this be the new Birkin bag of international activism?'

The Gaza Gamble

So Madleen is sailing towards Gaza a place more complicated than deciding what to wear to a Hamptons wedding. Israel led by Defence Minister Israel Katz is basically saying 'Honey not today!' with a naval blockade. Katz told the military to stop the boat warning Greta and her 'Hamas propaganda spouting friends' (ouch!) to turn back. It's like telling Carrie Bradshaw she can't have cosmos – utterly unthinkable!

Why Gaza Though?

Greta bless her heart claims she's there to 'challenge Israel's illegal siege and escalating war crimes' and highlight the humanitarian crisis. Which let's be real sounds like a storyline ripped straight from a UN drama. Apparently Gaza's 2.3 million people are at risk of famine. It's enough to make you swap your Louboutins for a pair of sensible walking shoes...and maybe pack some protein bars.

Blockade Blues: Fashionably Late or Dangerously Defiant?

Israel ever the pragmatist (or maybe just the overprotective boyfriend in this scenario) insists the blockade is crucial for national security. They don't want weapons getting to Hamas. It's like saying 'No you can't wear that dress; it's too revealing!' But is it really about the dress or is it about control? And more importantly is rice and baby formula really a threat to national security? I mean come on!

Echoes of the Past: Will History Repeat Itself?

Now here's where it gets a bit more 'Sex and the City 2' dark. In 2010 Israeli commandos boarded a Turkish ship heading to Gaza and it ended with ten people dead. Yikes! This Madleen yacht is carrying a symbolic quantity of aid but also a whole lot of tension. The crew is braced for interception and I'm bracing for a serious international incident. It's like waiting for Big to finally say 'I love you' – you know something big is coming you're just not sure what.

So What's a Girl to Do?

As the Madleen sails closer to Gaza I can't help but wonder... Is this about politics humanitarianism or just really good publicity? Whatever the reason one thing is clear: Greta's Gaza gamble is the kind of story that makes you question everything from your wardrobe choices to the meaning of life. And that my dears is what makes life in this city – and on the high seas – so utterly fabulous...and terrifying.
