From Forbidden Fruit to Open Source Love?
Okay darlings let's talk tech. You know how sometimes you put up a wall say 'no dating,' and then suddenly you're at a bar at 2 a.m. ordering cosmos with the very person you swore off? Well that's kind of what the U.S. government just did with China and chip design software. One minute it's all 'you can't have this,' the next it's 'mi casa es su casa' – or should I say '??????'?
Siemens Synopsys and Cadence: The New Fab Four?
Siemens AG (well their Oregon based chip design software subsidiary Siemens EDA) Synopsys and Cadence are all singing the same tune: 'Restrictions lifted!' It's like when Aidan came back into the picture and suddenly everything felt…possible again. Except instead of pottery it's semiconductors. Sales and support are back on and everyone's pretending like those awkward export control restrictions never happened. Can we ever really go back to the way things were? I wonder…
The Commerce Department: Hot or Not?
The U.S. Commerce Department tight lipped as ever hasn't commented. Are they playing hard to get? Or are they just really bad at returning calls? It reminds me of when Big would disappear for weeks leaving me wondering if I'd been ghosted before ghosting was even a thing.
Show Me the Money (and the Market Share)
Synopsys saw a slowdown in China which makes up around 10% of their quarterly revenue (a cool $1.6 billion no biggie). China is also trying to boost its own chip design game like a girl who gets a makeover after a bad breakup. Synopsys Cadence and Siemens EDA you have a market share of 31% 30% and 13% respectively in 2024 are these the only 3 companies in the world who sells these things? It's like a real estate broker and a real housewife arguing about their respective share of the market. Could you BE any more cutthroat?
Trade Truce or Tech Tease?
China's hinting at a trade truce a conditional agreement some rare earths and advanced technology exchanging hands. Is this the start of something beautiful or just another situationship destined to end in tears and a pile of unpaid bills? Like the time I thought Berger was 'the one' only to realize he was just a post it note kind of guy. 'I'm sorry. I can't. Don't hate me.'
Stock Surge: Retail Therapy for Companies
Shares of Synopsys and Cadence jumped like a pair of Manolos at a sample sale. Is this a sign of good things to come or just a temporary high? It's like that first date where everything seems perfect but you know deep down someone's going to reveal they're still living with their mother and collecting porcelain dolls. Oh well you take the good you take the bad you take them both and there you have… the facts of life?
