FanDuel adds a 50-cent surcharge on all Illinois wagers to offset new state taxes, and DraftKings might follow suit. Is this a necessary evil, or are they playing us?

A Fee nomenal Problem?

Alright folks Captain America here. I've been thawed out long enough to see that even in the 21st century some things never change – like the government and corporations finding new ways to reach into your pockets. This time it's FanDuel slapping a 50 cent surcharge on every bet in Illinois. Why? Apparently the state decided to give them a 'taxing' time with some new levies. Seems like even superheroes need to watch their wallets these days. As I always say 'I can do this all day,' but I'd rather not pay extra while doing it.

DraftKings: The Reluctant Robin?

Now word on the street is that DraftKings might follow suit. A spokesperson said they're 'anticipating taking action.' Sounds like they're trying to figure out how to drop the bad news without facing the wrath of a thousand angry bettors. Remember that time I had to convince Tony Stark to play nice? This feels a lot like that. But hey at least we're not fighting aliens this time. Just the taxman. 'Avengers assemble!'... to figure out how to pay our bills.

Big Numbers Bigger Problems

Some analyst named Jordan Bender says this new fee could mean an extra $79 million for DraftKings and $86 million for FanDuel by 2026. That's a lot of dough even for someone who's seen Howard Stark's bank account. The Illinois tax is on top of a progressive tax passed last year which leaves the most successful sportsbooks paying taxes at a rate of 40%. Before the change they were paying at 15%. This whole thing makes me think that maybe I missed my calling and should have been an accountant. Though I can't imagine me sitting behind a desk doing taxes all day.. I'd rather be doing what's right. So what is the right way to do things here?

The Price of Backlash

Remember when DraftKings initially threatened to pass the costs onto consumers last year? Yeah that didn't go over too well. They backed down faster than Loki when the Hulk gets angry. Now FanDuel is stepping up to manage the impact. Flutter Entertainment CEO Peter Jackson said the tax disproportionately punishes the companies that have invested the most in growing the regulated market. Kind of like when I get blamed for breaking a window when all I was trying to do was catch a runaway frisbee. Sometimes doing the right thing ain't easy but that's why we do it.

Taxman Always Wins?

Jackson says the fee will motivate gamblers to head to unregulated operators who don't pay taxes and don't have the same consumer protection. This is what the bad guys want! It's always a game of cat and mouse isn't it? 'Whatever it takes,' right? It's the same old story just a different battlefield.

A Fair Game or a Rigged One?

At the end of the day this whole situation smells like a rigged game to me. I always thought that playing fair was the way to win. Now I'm not so sure. Sometimes you can't win unless you get the help of your friends. With taxes on the rise it's time to fight for your rights. If the Taxman is too strong to beat by yourself call the Avengers and we can figure out a way to help.
