A Gulf By Any Other Name?

Well folks duty calls even when it involves…geography. Seems a federal judge just gave the White House a bit of a 'Hulk Smash' moment. They ruled that barring Associated Press reporters and photographers from places like the Oval Office just ain't right. Apparently this all started when the uh *previous* administration decided the Gulf of Mexico should be called the 'Gulf of America.' The AP bless their objective hearts stuck to the original name. And like clockwork the access got cut off. As someone who always stands on freedom I couldn't stand idly by!

First Amendment: Earth's Mightiest Defense!

Now I'm no lawyer but even I know the First Amendment is pretty important. Freedom of the press isn't just some fancy idea; it's what keeps folks like you and me informed. Judge McFadden who was appointed by… well never mind saw right through it. He said blocking AP was 'contrary to the First Amendment.' You know it reminds me of that time I told Tony Stark 'We need to be the better men.' Turns out governments need to be better men (and women) too.

Delay of Game: Appeal Incoming

Of course the White House gets a little time to appeal. They're probably scrambling like Loki after getting roughed up by the Hulk. But here's the thing: this isn't just about some squabble over a body of water (though let's be honest 'Gulf of America' sounds like a theme park ride). It's about whether the government gets to pick and choose which reporters get to ask questions. And let me tell you back in my day we didn't stand for that kind of nonsense.

The AP Strikes Back!

The AP for their part is standing their ground. Julie Pace their executive editor hit the nail on the head: this is about whether the government can control what you say. It's a slippery slope folks. Next thing you know they'll be trying to tell us that the sky is green and Bucky's not a good guy. Thankfully the AP filed suit to regain their access. Justice Prevailed!

History Repeating? Not on My Watch!

This whole thing reminds me of a few other tussles with the press. Remember when they tried to pull credentials from that Playboy guy and that CNN correspondent? The courts smacked them down then too. Seems some lessons just need to be learned again and again like how to properly fold a fitted sheet. (Still haven't figured that one out.)

Freedom Rings! (and Gets Quoted)

So where do we go from here? Well the White House can appeal but the message is clear: you can't just shut out reporters because you don't like what they're saying. As Katie Fallow from the Knight First Amendment Institute put it 'The First Amendment means the White House can't ban news outlets from covering the president simply because they don't parrot his preferred language.' Freedom of speech doesn't only belong to people in political power it belongs to everyone! Now if you'll excuse me I think I hear someone mispronouncing 'Wakanda.' Time for a teachable moment!
