Cambodia's Pain America's Gain? Don't Bet Your Shirt On It.
So Trump's slapping Cambodia with a 49% tariff thinking he's playing 4D chess and bringing manufacturing back to the good ol' U.S. of A. Newsflash: it ain't happening. As Barnett from the American Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia so eloquently put it 'I can't imagine that Americans want to sit down and sew a pair of sweatpants for long hours of the day.' He's right. We're too busy innovating disrupting and making deals to get our hands dirty with that kind of grunt work.
Made in the USA? More Like Made Somewhere Else Anywhere Else!
Instead of reshoring these Cambodian factories are eyeing Egypt sub Saharan Africa India Indonesia – basically anywhere but here. Because let's be honest American labor ain't cheap. Remember what I always say? 'What's the point of having f*** you money if you can't say f*** you?' Well American workers are saying 'f*** you' to those low paying garment jobs. And who can blame them?
The Pause That Refreshes... Not Orders That Is.
Barnett says orders are being paused. Everyone's waiting to see how the dust settles. Classic. Uncertainty breeds fear and fear breeds paralysis. But paralysis is an opportunity isn't it? Time to figure out who's overexposed who's underprepared and who's ripe for a good old fashioned Axe Capital squeeze.
Under Armour to Dollar General: Prepare to Pay Up.
The list of companies importing from Cambodia reads like a who's who of retail: Under Armour Lululemon Dollar General... They're all going to feel the pinch. And guess who ultimately pays the price? The American consumer. So much for making America great again more like making American wallets lighter again. All those brands who are getting ready to charge us more are dead to me. I want their stock prices annihilated! Who's with me?!
The White House's Tariff Fantasies: A Numbers Game Gone Wrong.
The White House is spinning tales of Cambodia hitting us with 97% tariffs but the real number is closer to 2.6%. It's like they're making up numbers to justify their agenda. Classic power move but it's also reckless. Bessent spouts about 'melting ice cube' tariffs as manufacturing magically returns to the US. Sure and I'm about to start knitting sweaters. The return on manufacturing just is not going to be there.
Cambodia's Desperate Plea: Is It Enough to Stop the Tariff Tsunami?
Cambodia's Prime Minister is bending over backward offering tariff concessions like they're going out of style. Vietnam's offering zero tariffs! But Navarro sniffs and says it's not enough. Seems like the goal isn't actually about trade deficits; it's about something else entirely. Control? Power? Or maybe they just want to watch the world burn. Whatever it is it's a dangerous game and the collateral damage is going to be real people losing their livelihoods.
