Reciprocal Tariffs?! More Like Reciprocal Headaches
Alright so Trump's back at it again shaking up the global sandbox. Ten percent tariffs on Indian goods? Better than 26% sure but it's like being told you're only getting punched in the arm instead of the face. The threat's still there looming like a damn Axe Capital short position about to go south. Trump's 'reciprocal' tariffs are just another way of saying 'I'm gonna do what's best for me and everyone else can eat my dust.' And you know what I say? Adapt or die. This is chess not checkers and I am always 10 steps ahead. That's how a guy from Yonkers ends up in a Hamptons castle.
India's Got a Secret Weapon? Consumerism Baby!
While countries like Thailand and Vietnam are practically begging for export deals India's got a secret weapon: its own damn consumers. They're buying stuff like there's no tomorrow. Exports only make up about a fifth of India's economy? That's a buffer a nice thick cushion against Trump's trade tantrums. It's like having a diversified portfolio – you can take a hit in one sector and still come out on top. That's how I roll. Diversify baby diversify.
IT Services: Untouchable (For Now)
Good news for the tech giants like TCS and Infosys: tariffs on goods not services. So for now they're safe. But let's be real a global slowdown? That'll hit everyone even the guys writing code in Bangalore. It's like a rising tide sinking all ships. The services component of India is what protects them in this situation. As James Sullivan said 'The U.S. administration is almost entirely focused on trade in goods not trade in services where the U.S. actually has a surplus.' Gotta love the surplus.
Vietnam's Going for Zero?! Is That Even Legal?
Vietnam's practically offering Trump a foot massage and a free condo just to get a free trade deal. Zero tariffs? That's insane! They're throwing the kitchen sink the bathroom sink and probably the damn toilet at the problem. It's desperation plain and simple. But hey desperation can be a powerful motivator. But here's the problem and that's what I deal with everyday in my profession: "You show loyalty to someone they tend to show it back to you."
Apple's Dilemma: India or Vietnam? Decisions Decisions…
Apple's thinking about shipping more made in India iPhones to the U.S. but zero tariffs in Vietnam? That's got Cupertino's head spinning like a roulette wheel. Twenty six percent tariffs in India are better than 125% in China but zero in Vietnam? Come on even I know that math. As Mark Martyrossian put it 'The bully is always more forgiving of those who succumb earlier to his charm.' India will have to be smart with what they want what they are willing to risk and what can they obtain.
India's Bargaining Chips: Not as Desperate as You Think
India's not gonna roll over and play dead like Vietnam. They've got leverage. Exports are a small part of their economy. They can hold their ground. They're not desperate enough to give away the farm. As Gaurav Narain said India won't compromise on agriculture. They'll play hardball. And that's how you win the game. I always make sure that people know that "I earn like I'm going to live forever and live like I'm going to die tomorrow."

This is just the beginning. The trade wars are far from over.

Trump just wants to win, no matter the cost. It's always been about Trump.

I trust Axelrod's take more than any economist. He knows how the game is played.
