Think Different Heal Different
Alright let's get one thing straight: I'm not a doctor but I play one in the stock market. And this news about Emory Hillandale Hospital going full Apple? It's either genius or a colossal waste of capital the kind you see before a company's stock plummets. Either way it's a bold move. They're betting the farm on iPads iPhones and even those fancy Apple Watches. I mean a hospital powered by devices that mostly get used to scroll through Instagram and order avocado toast? Someone's got balls. Or maybe they just listened to Wags too much. Remember 'What's the point of having fuck you money if you never say fuck you?'
The Epicenter of Change (Or at Least a New App)
They're integrating this Apple hardware with Epic Systems that electronic health record behemoth. Apparently doctors and nurses will be tapping away at their iPads instead of scribbling illegible notes on clipboards. Efficiency right? Or a recipe for accidental data breaches and patients getting the wrong meds because of a glitch. But hey who am I to judge? As long as they don't start using Siri to diagnose patients we might be alright. After all you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs... or in this case a few medical records.
Cybersecurity: Because Nobody Wants Their Medical Records Hacked
Emory's VP of Health Affairs Dr. Ravi Thadhani learned the hard way with that CrowdStrike outage. Twenty thousand devices paralyzed but the Apple stuff kept chugging. So now they are hoping to have a tighter more secure system. The old 'Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice...' adage comes to mind. Let's just hope this Apple fied hospital can withstand the next cyberattack. Otherwise we'll be reading headlines about leaked patient data and trust me nobody wants that. Except maybe Axe Capital. Information is power after all.
From Pilot Program to Full Blown Apple Orchard
Apparently Emory did a test run on a single floor before going all in. The feedback was "phenomenal." 'Phenomenal' could mean anything these days. Maybe the doctors just liked the sleek design. Or maybe they gave everyone a free pair of AirPods. Either way the gamble paid off enough for them to expand. If this experiment works other hospitals might follow suit. Then we'll have doctors fighting over who gets the latest iPhone Pro. The healthcare system is one giant never ending competition. Survival of the Fittest.
Apple's Doctor Is In
Apple's VP of Health Dr. Sumbul Desai spouted some corporate buzzwords about technology improving lives. Of course she did. What else is she going to say? It's PR people. But here's the thing: if these Apple devices actually help doctors do their jobs better and provide better care then maybe just maybe there's something to this. And if not? Well at least Apple sold a boatload of gadgets. Win win right? Until the shareholders start to ask questions...
Game Changer or Just Another Gadget?
Emory's CEO Dr. Joon Lee called this a 'game changer.' Strong words. It's a gamble that might just revolutionize healthcare or it might be a case study in tech overreach. But hey you don't make billions by playing it safe. You take risks. You disrupt. You 'short the peanut butter.' If this Apple powered hospital succeeds it could set a new standard for patient care. If it fails? Well there's always next quarter. Either way I'll be watching. Closely. I want to be the first to know if this is a 'buy' or a 'sell.'
