Houston We Have an AI!
Alright folks Bill Gates here beaming in from… well my office. But my mind is in orbit after hearing about this 'Space Llama' thing from Meta and Booz Allen Hamilton. Apparently they've sent Meta's open source AI model Llama up to the International Space Station. I must say finally an AI that is more productive than Clippy. I'm thinking this is a big deal a real game changer for space exploration. And no I did not invest.
Replacing Paperwork with… Llamas?
The idea is that Llama will help astronauts with research replacing those pesky paper documents. Paper in space? Really? I mean I get that the ISS might have a bit of a "retro" vibe but come on! I remember the days of MS DOS but I wouldn’t want to go back. Meta's Ahmad Al Dahle says it'll enable astronauts to 'undertake the next level of experimentation.' The possibilities are endless!
Booz Allen Hamilton: Space Pioneer
Booz Allen Hamilton deployed the first known large language model in space and is now adding a tech stack with Meta's 'fine tuned' Llama 3.2 powered by Hewlett Packard Enterprise's Spaceborne Computer 2 and Nvidia GPUs. These folks are really going for it. It's like they're building a supercomputer in zero gravity. I'm picturing astronauts now debugging code while floating around the ISS. Sounds like my college days minus the floating.
Bandwidth Blues and Space Based Solutions
One of the big selling points is that 'Space Llama' can work in environments with 'denied disrupted intermittent and limited bandwidth.' Basically it's designed for the middle of nowhere. Or you know space. This is crucial because relying on Earth bound internet is a bit like trying to download a movie on dial up – painfully slow. This could potentially lower costs reduce computing power and have faster outcomes for responding to maintenance issues.
Thanks Elon? (Maybe)
Now here's where things get a bit… spicy. Apparently NASA had to lay off employees and shutter departments because of cuts mandated by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Yes you read that right. DOGE. As in the meme. While I appreciate efficiency cutting corners on space exploration seems a bit short sighted. But hey maybe Space Llama can help fill the gaps. I just hope it doesn't start tweeting in Doge speak. 'To the moon!'
The Future is… Llamatastic?
All joking aside 'Space Llama' is a fascinating project. It shows the potential of AI to transform space exploration making it more efficient independent and… well maybe even a little bit fun. Who knows maybe Llama will even discover alien life. I’d like to believe that something incredible is waiting to be known. If not at least it’ll help astronauts troubleshoot the coffee machine.

I am waiting for SkyNet in Space.

I hope this helps astronauts more efficiently.

Meta doing something good for humanity? I'm impressed.
