Another Day Another Billion (Almost)
Well hello there fellow innovators and deal makers! Bill Gates here dropping in to talk about something that's got my attention – and it's not just another toilet revolution (though progress on that front continues!). It's Helsing this European defense tech startup that just landed a whopping €600 million! That's real money folks. Makes you think doesn't it? Back in my day we were just trying to get everyone to use Windows. Now it's AI powered battlefield analysis. Times they are a changin'.
Spotify's CEO Gets Serious (About Defense!)
Daniel Ek the Spotify guy is leading the charge with his VC firm Prima Materia. Shakil Khan an early Spotify backer is also along for the ride. So the guy who helped us listen to ABBA on repeat is now investing in… well things that go boom. I guess everyone's looking for a hit these days but this is a different kind of chart topper. I hope they're at least considering licensing agreements for the sound effects. Imagine 'Explosion No. 5' featuring the Helsing Philharmonic.
VCs Gone Wild (for Defense Tech)
Look I get it. The world's a bit of a mess right now. Ukraine Middle East... it's like a real life game of Risk but with actual consequences. So naturally everyone's throwing money at defense tech. Venture funding in Europe's defense sector is up 30%! Meanwhile the broader VC market is down 45%. It is almost as if some VCs are saying: "Hey let's invest in the future of… not being invaded!"
Helsing's Secret Sauce: AI and Drones (Hold the Mayo)
These guys are selling software that uses AI to analyze sensor data on the battlefield. Basically they're trying to give soldiers real time insights. And they're building their own drones now the HX 2. Now I'm a software guy but even I can see the appeal of a military drone named HX 2. Sounds like something straight out of a sci fi movie. Although let's hope the AI doesn't get any ideas of its own. Remember what happened with Tay Microsoft's AI chatbot? Yeah let's not repeat that.
European Technological Sovereignty: A Fancy Way of Saying 'Made in Europe'
Helsing wants to use this cash to invest in Europe's 'technological sovereignty.' Translation: they want to build this stuff in Europe by Europeans. I'm all for local production. I mean I love a good Big Mac as much as the next guy but sometimes you just want a decent Bratwurst made down the street. It's about resilience folks. And maybe a bit of national pride. Nothing wrong with that.
Valuation Games and the Future of Conflict (Hopefully Less Conflict)
They're not saying what their new valuation is but they were valued at €5 billion last year. That's a lot of Euros! Look I'm not an expert in defense tech but I do know that innovation is key to progress. And if this investment leads to safer more secure world then I'm all for it. Though personally I'm still betting on vaccines and sanitation. They're a lot less likely to end up on the wrong side of history. As I always say “Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning.” Let's hope we learn from this and build a better safer future. But hey if things go south at least we'll have Spotify to listen to while the robots fight.
