Is My Closet Half Empty or Half Full?

So I was reading this article the other day right? And it's all doom and gloom about American Eagle Outfitters. Apparently they warned investors that people aren't buying as much. It's like are we all suddenly channeling our inner Samantha and embracing a minimalist lifestyle? Or is everyone just waiting for the next sample sale? As I was wondering I couldn't help but ask myself in a world full of trends is financial insecurity the new black?

Weathering the Storm... Literally!

The CEO some guy named Jay Schottenstein (sounds like a character from a Woody Allen movie no?) said the "first quarter is off to a slower start than expected reflecting less robust demand and colder weather." Okay so is it the economy or the polar vortex? I mean even I'm not tempted to buy a new sundress when it's snowing sideways! I bet if Manolo Blahnik made snow boots things would be different.

Guidance? More Like Misguidance!

Apparently other retailers are singing the same sad song. Weak guidance cautious commentary blah blah blah. It's like everyone's suddenly auditioning for a role in a depressing indie film. But here's the kicker: American Eagle actually beat expectations on earnings per share. So they're making money but they're still worried? It's like dating a guy who's emotionally unavailable but has a great apartment. Complicated!

Aerie to the Rescue!

But wait there's a glimmer of hope! Aerie American Eagle's lingerie and activewear line is doing well! So maybe we're not all broke we're just prioritizing comfort over you know actual clothes. It’s like choosing sweatpants over stilettos – a sign of the times darling! It makes you wonder is everyone just staying in? Because trust me if I had a figure like those Aerie models I'd be showing it off all over town.

Tariffs: The New Four Letter Word

And then there are the dreaded tariffs. Apparently they're expecting a $5 million to $10 million hit from duties on products from China. And they're not planning on passing those costs onto us the consumers! Bless their cotton socks. But will that last? It makes you wonder are tariffs the new relationship dealbreaker? Because if my shoes are going to cost more someone's going to have to pay!

The Mall: A Dying Breed or Just a Late Bloomer?

Finally there's the mall situation. Apparently traffic is down which means fewer people are stumbling into American Eagle stores. It's like the mall is becoming the new landline phone – obsolete! But they're remodeling their stores trying to bring them into the 21st century. It's like giving your grandmother a makeover. Will it work? Only time and a killer sale will tell. As I was pondering I couldn't help but wonder will I ever find love in a shopping mall again?
