Oh Honey Not Another Layoff!
So I was reading the news the other day – you know when I wasn't busy contemplating which Manolo Blahniks best complemented my cosmos – and I stumbled upon this little tragedy unfolding in the automotive world. General Motors yes *the* GM is putting the brakes on its BrightDrop electric van production in Canada. And darling 500 jobs are getting the 'it's not you it's me' speech. It’s like when Aidan said he wasn’t ready for marriage... devastating! Can we ever really be ready? And can GM ever really sell enough vans?
From Two Shifts to Shifting the Blame!
Apparently the CAMI assembly plant in Ontario is going from two shifts to one which in the world of fashion is like going from two fabulous outfits a day to... well just one. And let me tell you one outfit a day in New York City is practically sartorial suicide! GM insists it's all about 'market demand' and 're balancing inventory.' Which is corporate speak for 'Oops we overestimated how many people wanted electric vans.' It’s like buying that Betsey Johnson dress on sale and then realizing you have no where to wear it! Why do we do it to ourselves?
BrightDrop's Dimming Star?
Remember BrightDrop? The shiny new eco friendly venture that was supposed to make GM billions? Well honey it seems like the sparkle has faded. They were projecting a billion dollars in revenue for 2023 but whispers say they fell short. It reminds me of that short story I wrote that I was SO sure was going to be a success. Then Miranda said it needed work. Ouch.
Blame It On…Trump?
And because every good drama needs a villain enter Donald Trump! The union president Lana Payne is pointing fingers at his tariffs and EV skepticism. Apparently he’s creating 'industry turmoil' and opening the door for China to dominate the EV market. Is that a real thing? I feel like there’s a political shoe analogy here somewhere but it’s early and my brain hasn’t had its caffeine yet…
A Lot Full of Unsold Dreams
To add insult to injury there are reports of hundreds of unsold BrightDrop vans gathering dust in a storage lot in Flint Michigan. It’s like finding a pile of unworn designer shoes in your closet – a heartbreaking testament to unmet expectations! I just...can't.
So What Now?
So here we are facing the question: Can GM revive its electric dream? Or is this the beginning of the end for BrightDrop? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: in the world of business just like in love sometimes the spark fades and you're left wondering 'Was it ever really meant to be?' And of course which shoes should I wear to ponder this? A dilemma for another day…

Maybe electric vans just aren't sexy enough? Need more bling!

A billion dollars? In this economy? Good luck with that!
