Like a Box of Chocolates You Never Know What You're Gonna Get

Mama always said life was like a box of chocolates you never know what you're gonna get. And that's how I feel about this whole Turner Sports thing. Seems like just yesterday they were scooping up sports rights left and right like Bubba catching shrimp. But now with this Paramount deal looming things are changing faster than I can run across a football field. They picked up the French Open and some three on three women's basketball but maybe they didn't run far enough.

Running on TNT

Remember when TNT thought they could replace the NBA with a bunch of smaller sports deals? They figured if they picked up enough of 'em it'd be like having the same distribution power. Like Jenny trying to find herself Turner was trying to find a way to stay relevant. Turns out getting a whole lot of little things isn't the same as having one big shiny thing. Now Paramount's coming along with all its NFL and college sports and those little deals might as well be sitting on a bench waiting to be picked for kickball. I read another article about AI Regulation Showdown Heats Up New York Congressional Race which reminded me that everything is changing so rapidly nowadays especially with AI becoming more prevalent.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 Sports

They're saying these smaller sports like the French Open and Unrivaled won't matter much to Paramount. Paramount already has the big guns: NFL The Masters March Madness. Those little sports deals are like me trying to play ping pong against a champion – I can try but I ain't gonna win no medals. For Paramount buying or renewing those smaller sports rights is like spending money on something they don't really need. Remember when I bought that shrimp boat company? Sometimes you just gotta know when to hold 'em and know when to fold 'em like Kenny Rogers always sang.

The NFL Factor

The NFL is gonna want more money from its media partners and that's gonna shake things up like a tornado in Alabama. TNT's MLB and NHL rights are up after 2028 and before this Paramount deal renewing those would have been real important. But now? Not so much. It's like when Bubba Blue was talking about all the different ways to cook shrimp. Turns out you only need a few good recipes. Paramount might just want the playoff games not the whole package. Less is more sometimes I reckon.

Bare Minimum Sports

Some folks are saying CBS might cut the amount of sports on TNT to the bare minimum. They don't need those Turner deals for carriage anymore. They got the CBS portfolio now which is like having a whole army instead of just a few soldiers. It's kind of like when I joined the Army suddenly I had a whole lot more backup than just myself. Paramount even has a deal with UFC so they can put those matches on TNT. Seems like they got plenty of options and Turner's smaller sports might be left out in the cold.

Jeff Shell's Future

Then there's Jeff Shell. Seems like he's a big Dodgers fan and always liked sports programming. But his future at a combined WBD Paramount is up in the air. They say he hasn't been involved in the deal talks. It's like when I wasn't invited to Jenny's wedding. Sometimes you just ain't part of the plan. And with an internal investigation going on well that's just like running through a minefield – you never know when something's gonna blow up. I hope he lands on his feet 'cause life's too short to be unhappy.
