FCC Chair's Threat Sparks First Amendment Fury

A Blinder's View on the Airwaves

Right so I hear this Carr bloke head of the FCC is causing a proper ruckus. Seems he's threatening to pull the licenses of broadcasters who aren't singing the right tune about this Iran business. "Public interest," he calls it. Sounds like a right load of bollocks to me. Reminds me of the time I had to keep the local police sweet – different game same dirty tactics. You control the message you control the narrative. But this ain't Birmingham in the 20s is it? This is America supposed to be the land of the free. Freedom of speech they call it. Seems a bit selective doesn't it?

Authoritarianism on the American Stage?

These Democrats are having a right go at him calling it authoritarian fascist even. Sen. Warren's spitting feathers about it saying it's straight out of the authoritarian playbook. Sounds a bit dramatic but she's not wrong. When the government starts telling people what they can and can't say that's a slippery slope. Next thing you know they'll be telling us what to think. As I always say “You can't trust anyone." Even allies like Sen. Ron Johnson are raising an eyebrow. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is calling the FCC chair's warning to broadcasters over Iran coverage "outrageous." It's like telling a man how to run his own business only the business is telling the truth or at least what they see as the truth. Let's not forget about Trump's Ten Day Doomsday Clock Ticks for Iran Oil Markets Brace which highlights the volatility surrounding this whole affair. This is getting messier than a back alley brawl.

Carr's Defense – A Smoke Screen?

Carr's digging his heels in quoting some old Supreme Court cases about the 'public interest.' Says no one has a First Amendment right to a license. Well that's a convenient way to twist things isn't it? It's like saying I have the right to run a business but only if I do it their way. This is like trying to use rules to bend the reality to his benefit you know "lies travel faster than the truth".

Deja Vu All Over Again

This ain't the first time this lot has gone after the media is it? Reminds me of that Jimmy Kimmel business. Pulled off the air for linking some bloke to Trump. And "The View" under investigation for giving a Democrat too much airtime. Seems like they're trying to muzzle anyone who doesn't toe the line. "Everyone's a whore Grace. We just sell different parts of ourselves" – I think those in the news media may have forgotten this.

Cable's Getting Involved Too?

Now they're talking about CNN and some billionaire taking over. The Defense Secretary seems right chuffed about it hinting the reporting might change. So the game continues. Control the narrative control the power. Same as it ever was. The world of broadcast is a lot like business “It's not a good idea to look at people like they're heroes. Makes you forget that even heroes are just ordinary men who make mistakes." And ordinary people who are easily swayed.

Who's Really in the Public Interest?

Of course all this fuss only applies to local TV. Cable streaming print – they're all safe. For now. But mark my words this is just the beginning. They'll keep pushing until they get what they want. It's up to us to see through the smoke and mirrors and decide what's really in the public interest. After all "Intelligence is a very valuable thing innit my friend? And usually it comes far too f***ing late."
