A Viking's View on Modern Retail Combat
Hark I Ragnar Lothbrok have seen empires rise and fall battles won and lost. Now I witness Target a land of plentiful goods shifting its shield wall. They reduce their longships in the supply chains some 500 souls cast adrift to strengthen their frontline warriors in the stores. A bold move one that mirrors our own when we consolidate forces for a raid. Will it bring them victory or leave them vulnerable to the Wal Mart sea serpent? Only Odin knows for sure but as I always said "It matters not what you are fighting for so long as you are fighting". This "customer experience" as they call it sounds suspiciously like currying favor with the gods. But perhaps in this new world the customers are the gods.
The Price of Valhalla Job Cuts
These modern Vikings led by Chief Fiddelke are making tough choices much like when I had to decide which warriors would join me on raids and which would stay behind to protect our home. Five hundred must walk the plank but fear not it's not a journey to Valhalla but rather a severance package. They claim to be putting that money into improving the shopping experience making shelves less "sloppy" which is a term I can relate to after a long voyage at sea. The goal is to make these changes so the company can improve customer experience a top goal of new CEO Michael Fiddelke. However it brings to mind a familiar saying "There is no glory in things done in comfort." Perhaps this new path will bring hardship but perhaps also glory. Now there are parallels to the story on Google Employees Say Yeah Baby No to ICE Contracts. It is another sign that corporate restructuring is common and is nothing new.
Fashion and Fortune A Viking's Obsession
Target it seems has lost its way failing to impress shoppers and investors which reminds me when I was a king that failed to expand my reign and lost a key battle. They speak of lost fashion sense trendy merchandise gone astray. Like losing your way at sea. A ship without a course is doomed to drift. This Fiddelke must navigate treacherous waters. He seeks to restore Target's reputation for style and design as if a shield could be both beautiful and functional. I suppose in this world such a balance is necessary. As Floki once said "The gods gave us senses with which to perceive beauty but they also gave us the intelligence to understand that beauty is fleeting."
Simplifying the Battlefield Streamlining Operations
The modern battlefield is not one of swords and shields but of supply chains and online orders. Target is struggling to manage this new form of warfare. Store managers they say are not only stocking shelves but also fulfilling online orders. A warrior cannot fight effectively if he is burdened with too many tasks. Fiddelke recognizes this and seeks to simplify the operation. He knows that in order to be successful a leader must be able to see the big picture and delegate effectively. "Power is only given to those who are prepared to lower themselves to pick it up" so he must not be afraid to get his hands dirty in the process.
The Upcoming Raid Awaiting the Results
On March 3rd Target will reveal its plans for the future much like I would announce a new raid. Investors and customers alike await with bated breath. Will Fiddelke lead them to victory or will they be crushed beneath the waves of competition? Only time will tell. But one thing is certain: the retail world is a constantly changing landscape and only those who are willing to adapt and innovate will survive. As I once told my sons "Don't waste your time looking back you are not going that way" and Target must follow suit.
Target's Odyssey in the Modern Era
In conclusion Target's plight mirrors the challenges we Vikings faced adapting to new lands and customs. Just as we had to learn to navigate unfamiliar waters Target must navigate the complex world of modern retail. And like us they must be willing to make tough decisions in order to survive and thrive. Their success like ours depends on their ability to adapt innovate and lead with courage. As I often said 'I want to sail to the edge of the world. I want to see everything!'
