A Witcher's Gaze on Washington's Moves

Right then another day another monster – this time of the bureaucratic variety. Seems the U.S. Treasury led by one Scott Bessent has decided to play a game of cat and mouse with Iranian oil. They've issued a 30 day waiver on sanctions allowing the purchase of Iranian oil at sea. Why you ask? Apparently to ease the pressure on energy supplies caused by the ongoing unpleasantness involving the U.S. Israel and Iran. Meddling in world affairs; it's always messy.

Oiling the Wheels of Diplomacy?

Bessent claims this temporary unlocking of supply will flood the market with roughly 140 million barrels of oil. The stated goal is to relieve temporary supply pressures. He even went so far as to say they're using Iranian barrels against Tehran while continuing "Operation Epic Fury". Sounds like something out of a poorly written bard's song if you ask me. Speaking of poorly written songs if you want to read about other questionable moves check out Trump's Iran Strategy Aims for the Goal or Own Goal. Perhaps diplomacy like a well brewed potion requires precise ingredients and timing. Or maybe it's just another excuse for someone to line their pockets. As always it pays to be wary.

Sanctions and Shenanigans

Now this isn't the first time the U.S. has fiddled with sanctions lately. They've previously eased restrictions on Russian oil as well. It makes one wonder if these sanctions are as effective as they claim. It's like fighting a griffin with a butter knife – impressive to some ultimately futile. "Evil is evil Stregobor," I once said. "Lesser greater middling… Makes no difference. The degree is arbitary. The definition's blurred. If I'm to choose between one evil and another then I prefer not to choose at all." This applies to global politics too.

The Devil is in the Details (and the Barrels)

The general license allows the sale of Iranian crude oil and petroleum products loaded on vessels between March 20 and April 19. So a limited time offer on chaos then? One has to question the long term strategy here. Are they genuinely trying to stabilize the market or just buying time? As Vesemir always told me "Sometimes the best way to handle a monster is to understand it."

A Witcher's Cynical Conclusion

All this talk of oil and sanctions… it's enough to make a witcher reach for the nearest bottle of White Gull. Perhaps this move will indeed stabilize the energy market. Or perhaps it's just another chapter in a never ending saga of political maneuvering and unintended consequences. Only time will tell. As for me I'll stick to hunting monsters. At least they're usually straightforward about their intentions.

Doubt and Distrust

One thing is clear: in the murky waters of international politics it's best to keep your sword sharp and your senses keen. Trust no one not even those who claim to be helping. As I've learned time and again the world is full of monsters both human and otherwise. And sometimes the hardest monsters to fight are the ones who wear suits and sign agreements.
